Staff Scientist

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a Staff Scientist in the Genome Instability and Chromatin Remodeling Section (GICRS) of the Laboratory of Genetics and Genomics (LGG) in Baltimore, MD. The GICRS focuses on three areas: (1) the roles of dual-activity topoisomerases in DNA and RNA metabolism, neurodevelopmental disorders, and aging; (2) multiprotein complexes maintaining DNA integrity, and (3) gene regulation by chromatin remodeling complexes.

The Staff Scientist will be responsible for designing and conducting research in two major related areas of rising importance in GICRS. First, the Staff Scientist will oversee the generation and analysis of Drosophila with genetic alteration in Top3b, TDRD3, and their interacting partners, using advanced techniques such as CRISPR-knockout and knock-in. Second, the Staff Scientist will investigate how topoisomerases solve RNA topological problems generated during RNA metabolism.

The incumbent will have a major role in assisting the Section Chief in project management, manuscript preparation, and experimental design, training postdoctoral fellows and postbaccalaureate students, and maintaining research continuity within the Laboratory.

The successful individual must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences or related fields, with at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience. The individual should be an expert in Drosophila genetics, development, and genomics. Experience in RNA biology (including siRNA or piRNA), protein analysis (including antibody generation and purification), cell biology, next generation sequencing (including RNA-seq), epigenetics (including ChIP-seq), and mouse models is desired. Excellent written and oral (English) communication skills are required.

Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the Laboratory. Although this Staff Scientist will be supervised by the Section Chief, he/she will be interacting with the scientists from the IRP and scientific community at large. The successful candidate will have experience in collaborative research documented in publications and more generally will have a history of publications that reflect experience in the analytical requirements of this position.
Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life, and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan participation, etc.) is available. All employees of the Federal Government are subject to the conflict of interest statutes and regulations, including the Standards of Ethical Conduct. Additional information regarding the NIA IRP is available at the following website: www.irp.nia.nih.gov.

To apply: Please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests, and three letters of recommendation to: Jamie Hertzfelt, Intramural Program Specialist; Office of the Scientific Director; Vacancy #NIA-IRP-20-06; National Institute on Aging, Biomedical Research Center, 251 Bayview Boulevard, Suite 100, Room 04C232, Baltimore, MD 21224 or email: niairpjobs@mail.nih.gov. Applications must reference the Vacancy #NIA-IRP-20-06 and be received on or before December 21, 2019 for consideration.
