The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is recruiting a Staff Scientist in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch (OEEB).

OEEB combines environmental, occupational, genetic, molecular and epidemiologic data to understand cancer etiology, chemical carcinogenesis and mechanisms of action of known or suspected occupational and environmental carcinogens. Branch investigators are leading state-of-the-art studies that evaluate environmental and occupational risk factors for cancer.

The successful candidate will provide support for multiple projects as a Staff Scientist to OEEB investigators on studies of environmental contaminants, including the following activities: accessing and preparing environmental data for exposure assessment and analysis; developing and maintaining study databases, developing contracts and concepts for study approvals; conducting analyses of epidemiologic data; supporting the development of exposure assessments; organizing results into clear presentations and concise summaries of work and contributing to manuscripts; and maintaining skills with exposure assessment tools and data resources.

The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree in epidemiology, environmental health, environmental exposure science, or other related disciplines. Candidates should have a strong background in environmental health and experience using environmental monitoring data to estimate exposures to environmental hazards, especially air and water contaminants, as well as knowledge of and demonstrated capacity to apply state-of-the-art exposure assessment and statistical methods in epidemiologic studies. The ability to communicate effectively in speech and in writing is important, as demonstrated by a track record of publications in peer-reviewed literature as part of a research team. The successful applicant will possess many (although not necessarily all) of the following skills: experience in carrying out environmental exposure assessments (including validation studies) and environmental epidemiology studies in core epidemiologic study designs (e.g., case-control, cohort, cross-sectional); proficiency in SAS, STATA or R programming; experience with Geographic Information Systems software (e.g., ArcGIS, MapInfo, R packages); ability to process and analyze large datasets; experience working with regulatory monitoring data and large geographically-referenced databases (e.g., U.S. Census, satellite and areal imagery, geocoded residential history data, commercial resources such as LexisNexis); strong quantitative skills and experience in the application of statistical methods for cancer epidemiology (e.g. Cox proportional hazards models, linear regression, logistic regression, etc.); experience in development and application of specialized models for exposure assessment (e.g., land use regression, hierarchical modeling, machine learning methods); and a demonstrated ability to self-educate in current and evolving exposure assessment approaches.
