Vacancy Description

The Institute of Cancer Research and Cambridge University are collaborating to establish the Cancer Research UK Children’s Brain Tumour Centre of Excellence (CRUK-CBTCE), led by Professor Paul Workman (ICR) and Professor Richard Gilbertson (Cambridge), to accelerate the discovery and development of new therapies for paediatric brain tumours.

A position is available in the Division of Cancer Therapeutics at The Institute of Cancer Research for an experienced postdoctoral scientist, to lead medicinal chemistry research applied to the discovery and optimisation of new small molecule drugs targeting childhood brain tumours.

The successful candidate will lead and conduct focussed medicinal chemistry and chemical biology research to progress projects in the CRUK-CBTCE drug discovery pipeline, with the aim of identifying new clinical candidate molecules. The post-holder will apply their own medicinal chemistry and synthesis skills to design and prepare new target molecules, working in a close, multi-disciplinary collaboration with scientists in the CRUK-CBTCE in London and Cambridge. They will be expected to supervise the research of a small group of medicinal chemistry staff and students. As the lead chemist, the successful candidate will evaluate potential drug discovery projects proposed by CRUK-CBTCE participants, and work with them to develop high quality drug discovery research proposals for further funding to grow the medicinal chemistry research effort. The post-holder will be expected to strongly engage in communication and publication of the Centre’s work, and to make effective professional connections with participating scientists. The CRUK-CBTCE will work in collaboration with experts researching therapies for adult brain tumours and the post-holder will play an important role in building links between these activities.

The post is located in well-equipped drug discovery laboratories in Sutton, South London, where there is the opportunity to work in close collaboration with world-class drug discovery chemistry, biology and DMPK specialists. Periodic travel to Cambridge to engage with key Centre participants is expected. Knowledge, experience and achievement in medicinal chemistry, and familiarity with a broad range of medicinal chemistry approaches, are essential.
