The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory – INL (, was founded under an international legal framework to perform interdisciplinary research and to deploy and articulate nanotechnology for the benefit of society. INL aims to become the world-wide hub for nanotechnology addressing society’s grand challenges in Ageing & Wellbeing and Mobility & Urban Living and developing a Safe & Secure Society.



INL is seeking a highly-qualified, self-motivated Staff Researcher in chemical engineering or nanotechnology to join the Water Quality Group. The group focus is on overcoming some of the most challenging issues in water environment making responsible use of the great opportunities that nanotechnology offers.

This position specifically targets the development of nano/micro-enabled surfaces for the control of microorganisms’ adhesion in water intensively exposed materials (pipes, containers, membranes, etc). Several projects in the group are focused on this general aim.


Job Role & Key responsibilities

The selected candidate is expected to participate on the development of novel solutions for water contact surfaces by nano/microscale engineering of surfaces, but as well, supporting the development of new biosensors for the monitoring of waterborne pathogens and other contaminants. The work will involve:

  • The development of micro/nanostructured surfaces for the control of waterborne bacterial adhesion (usually related with the control of biofilm formation); 
  • The selected candidate is expected to contribute with own ideas on the area of Micro/nanostructured surfaces for control of microorganisms;
  • Deliver oral presentations at national and international conferences;
  • Publish the work in high quality journals;
  • Participate in the submission of project proposals.


Job Requirements

  • PhD degree in Nanotechnology or Chemical Engineering;
  • Strong experience (5+ years) in micro/nanostructured surfaces design (CAD) and fabrication (nano imprinting lithography, hot embossing, injection molding, photolithography, CNC micromilling);
  • Strong experience in surface chemistry and characterization (SEM, AFM, QCM)
  • Experience in microbiology (mainly bacterial culture);
  • Capability to work both, independently and concurrently, within a small team environment;
  • The applicant should have past experience in working with international and cross-functional teams;
  • Relevant experience but not mandatory in Biosensing:

-         Electrochemical sensors;

-         Optical sensors (fluorescence, SPR, SERS).

  • Experience in publishing at the international level in high impact factor journals in the field;

Applicants with international mobility experience will be highly evaluated.


Personal Skills

  • Strong motivation to work both independently and as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment, with the ability to pay close attention to detail and to meet deadlines;
  • A good track record of disseminating research results.
  • Experience in carrying out research in collaboration with industry is highly valued.



English is the working language of INL. Therefore, excellent communication skills in English are required.



The work plan will be developed at the INL under the scientific guidance of Dr. Begoña Espina (Group leader of the Water Quality research group).The successful candidate will be integrated in the Water Quality Research Group.


Duration of the contract

The total duration of the employment contract shall be 18 months and may be renewed based on the performance of the individual and the duration of the project. The expected starting date is March 2020.

  • Depending on the place of residence, INL covers 100% of travel expenses for all family members.
