About the team/job
The Protein Data Bank in Europe Team (PDBe; pdbe.org) is part of the Worldwide Protein Data Bank organisation (wwPDB; wwpdb.org), which maintains the global archive of structural data on biomacromolecules – the PDB. Structural Biology is changing, and the PDB archive faces challenges with the growth of the number and complexity of deposited structures. The PDBe Team plays a leading role in developing OneDep – the common wwPDB system for deposition, validation and biocuration of biomolecular structure data. The team also maintains a number of services, such as API, query system, PDB entry pages, PDBePISA and PDBeFold used by structural biologists and the wider scientific community. The team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary mix of professionals: scientists and software engineers. The PDBe and CS3DB teams form the Molecular and Cellular Structure cluster within the EBI.
We are looking for a software developer with a strong demonstrated record of using Python programming language and a working knowledge of relational and/or other database technologies to further develop and maintain the OneDep system. A background in, or affinity with, Structural Biology, Bioinformatics or Chemoinformatics is a distinct advantage. The successful candidate will work closely with other members of the global OneDep team to plan and implement improvements to the system.
The tasks for this post include:
- to implement improvements to, maintain and troubleshoot the OneDep system;
- to help maintain the OneDep deposition and biocuration processes;
- to interact with the global wwPDB/OneDep team, and EMBL-EBI and external teams.
The successful candidate will report to the coordinator for the Data Enrichment and Integration team at PDBe. This is an opportunity for the right person to contribute to the wwPDB mission of archiving high quality structure data as well as develop an excellent understanding of complex biological data and developing data integration infrastructure.
We are looking for a Software developer with strong software engineering skills. You should be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with the wwPDB OneDep and PDBe team members. You will also interact with other teams at EMBL-EBI and other external collaborators. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as excellent knowledge of English are therefore required.
You should hold a degree in Computer Science/IT or Structural Biology/Bioinformatics or related fields and should have a minimum 2 years’ work experience in these or related subjects with a demonstrated record of software development.
- Excellent knowledge of Python (scripting, data integration, REST API development)
- Working knowledge of the Django framework
- Working knowledge of database technologies
- Working knowledge of Git repository management
