Hiring Salary Range: $78,488 - $99,143 (at NR8) or higher commensurate with experience and demonstrated expertise

Position Reports to: Director (AEL-AMS Lab)

Effective Start Date: As soon as possible

2.     Position Purpose

Works at senior level as the Andre E. Lalonde AMS lab staff physicist. Is responsible for overseeing AMS operations in support of ongoing AEL-AMS client contract samples ranging from natural abundance radiocarbon dating to actinides, fission products and radiohalides. Also works with industry leaders, graduate students and professors at the University of Ottawa and internationally in support of major research initiatives and projects. Independently conducts and coordinates complex projects pertaining to AMS methodological development and improving data quality. Devises new procedures and experimental techniques requiring an understanding of associated technical fields in ion beam physics, accelerator mass spectrometry, and/or AMS applications in applied disciplines (i.e. the Earth and Environmental Sciences).

3.     Specific Accountabilities

  •  Leads team responsible for operation, maintenance and development of new applications in AMS.
  • Leads QA/QC of lab AMS data to ensure reporting of highest data quality to international AMS clients.
  • Leads diagnosis of AMS instrument problems and implements improvements.
  • Design and implementation of new AMS related research programs.
  • Leads a team of researchers and students to achieve AMS research objectives.
  • Oversees setup and running of planned experiments, ensuring appropriately supervision and support.
  • Ensures that results are recorded, analyzed and disseminated in a timely fashion.
  • Manages research grants in accordance with university and sponsor requirements.
  • Seeks and develops new AMS research opportunities and leads or participates in the development of new projects and proposals.

4.     Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • PhD in a relevant discipline and at least five years of practical experience as an independent researcher, or MSc with several years (5-7) of job-related work experience (Some roles require more extensive experience or training in a particular area of research, procedure, technique, or equipment).
  • Experience in the use, theory and/or application of accelerator mass spectrometry is required.
  • Leads a team of researchers and students to achieve research objectives.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Judgement in choosing best protocol/adapting procedures to meet changing needs.
  • Computer skills to aid in research, analysis and data presentation.
  • Interpersonal, technical, scientific and communications skills (written/oral).
