2x Full time, fixed term contract until 31 December 2021 (extendable by another 6 months)

This is an immensely exciting opportunity to join the PathLAKE (Pathology image data Lake for Analytics, Knowledge and Education) centre team based in the Department of Computer Science, as a Senior Research Fellow (Data Scientist). PathLAKE has received over £15m funding from Innovate UK and industrial partners to build a world-class image data repository and develop AI tools to improve diagnosis and deliver precision treatments. The consortium of nationally leading experts is led by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) with the University of Warwick being one of the academic partners, alongside other academic partners, NHS, Royal Philips and other industrial partners around the UK.

Leading the computational arm of PathLAKE, the team at the University of Warwick, led by Professor Nasir Rajpoot, has received over £2.2m. We are recruiting a new team of researchers and developers in order to build a massive multi-purpose pathology image data lake and develop novel AI tools to demonstrate diagnostic efficiencies of computer-aided testing of pathology samples and to identify accurate predictive response markers. As a data scientist on the project, you will work on the development of PathLAKE Analytics Engine offering cutting-edge, massively parallelisable, industry-grade deep learning based solutions for computer-aided screening in large clinical databases of multi-gigapixel pathology images and for predicting response to particular therapies for cancer patients. You will also be expected to contribute to the building and operation of the PathLAKE Data Lake as well as to the development of the AI solutions for regulatory approvals and deployment into a clinical setting.

Suitable candidates will have at least a 2.1 Honours degree and a PhD (or equivalent qualification and appropriate professional experience) in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, and preferably industry experience in professional software development and data analysis. You will have a strong background and experience in one or more of the following, preferably with application to clinical data: deep/machine learning; large-scale data analysis; scalable statistical techniques; predictive analytics; data mining; and big data management.

Undertake highly complex and unstructured data analysis and assist with the development of new analytical and data management approaches, in order to support the work of the PathLAKE project lead at Warwick, within the national centre of excellence for the use of digital pathology and artificial intelligence, to develop and enhance its reputation, both internally and externally. Also, to mentor colleagues with less experience and conduct individual or collaborative research projects.
