The senior lecturer/associate professor in neurochemistry will be placed at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics (DBB). Neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology is one of the central themes of research and education at the department. Research groups within this theme focus on the brain control of innate behaviours, neural networks, neurodegenerative mechanisms, studies of ion channels, neurotoxins, cellular differentiation, intra- and extracellular signal transduction and the blood-brain-barrier. DBB is also home to internationally leading research on membrane proteins. A wide spectrum of analytical methods including biochemistry, bioinformatics, computational chemistry, biophysics and molecular biology are used and developed at the department. Other facilities at DBB include cell culture, in vivo and in vitro experimentation, MST, NMR, techniques for studying protein folding, comparative genomics crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, electrophysiology, confocal microscopy and quantitative image analysis.

The academic environment for neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology at Stockholm University also includes scientists at the Departments of Zoology and Molecular Biosciences – The Wenner-Gren Institute. Furthermore, human brain function is a research focus at the Departments of Linguistics and Psychology. Several DBB research groups are located at Science for Life Laboratory, a national facility providing access to advanced methods for studies of the nervous system, e.g. via single-cell sequencing and sophisticated imaging techniques. In addition, the proximity to the neuroscience departments at Karolinska Institutet provides ample opportunities for fruitful collaborations. Major investments have been and are being made at Stockholm University in new infrastructures of relevance for neuroscience: a state-of-the-art animal facility, a national microscopy facility with unique opportunities for intra-vital microscopy, a cryo-EM microscope, and the Stockholm University Brain Imaging Centre, an advanced interdisciplinary infrastructure for non-clinical research on brain function and structure.

Subject description
Neurochemistry comprises biochemical studies of the nervous system at the molecular level.

Main responsibilities
The position involves research, teaching and supervision, primarily in Neurochemistry.

Qualification requirements
In order to qualify for the position as associate professor, the applicant must have demonstrated good teaching skills and have a doctoral degree, or equivalent research expertise, of relevance to the subject area and the main responsibilities of the position.
All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, equal attention will be given to both research and teaching skills. The assessment of research skills will focus primarily on merits within the subject area of the position.

Teaching and learning in higher education
Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. An applicant who has not completed at least 15 credits of teaching and learning in higher education and is not considered to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge should undergo such training within the first two years of employment.

At the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics research and education within the subject neurochemistry with molecular neurobiology is performed. Important research areas include molecular aspects of neurodegeneration, the neuronal network basis of innate behavior, ion channels, neurotoxins, cellular differentiation, signal transduction, neuropeptides, as well as the blood-brain-barrier. A broad spectrum of biochemical, biophysical, bioinformatical and molecular biological methods are used and refined. These methods include cell culture, electrophysiology, molecular anatomy, MST, NMR, crystallography, cryo-EM, confocal microscopy, and quantitative image analysis.

Most of the education within the subject neurochemistry with molecular neurobiology is at the master’s level. The language of instruction in master courses and programme is English. However, the language of instruction in first-cycle courses and programmes is Swedish. If the successful candidate does not speak Swedish at the time of appointment, he/she is expected to acquire the necessary language skills during the first two years of employment.
