The Department of Soil and Environment undertakes research and higher education for sustainable soil and land use management in agriculture, forestry and urban environments. The activities are carried out in a Swedish and international context as well as in partnership with private, policy and public sectors. Outcomes are aligned to, and contribute towards national and international strategies on food security, environmental sustainability, climate policy framework and Agenda 2030.

Subject area

The academic subject area addresses water transport processes and water quality at field to landscape scales, with emphasis on land use management in agricultural systems.


The holder of the position is expected to:
•Lead, develop and coordinate research within the research area
•Actively apply for research grants and other funding sources
•Develop and support teaching in the subject area at undergraduate, master and PhD levels
•Supervise PhD students Supervise and mentor other staff as required
•Collaborate actively for synergies and contributions within the department and at SLU
•Strengthen national and international networks with researchers, public and private sectors, and society in general
•Actively share research findings to wider public, practitioners and policy to take science into use
•Teach in Swedish within four years of taking up the position.


The applicant should
•have a completed doctorate
•have academic skills within the subject area
•have good knowledge of English
•have teaching proficiency.

Assessment criteria

Candidates for the position will be assessed based on the merits, skills and experience required for appointment and duties listed, shown in application and during interview.

Regarding scientific skills, the following will be taken into account:
•both completed and ongoing research scientific excellency
•the ability to independently initiate and conduct innovative research
•experience and success in attracting and managing external research and other grants.

Previous experience related to the interlinkages between soil nutrients, crop-soil management practices and water quality is a merit. Experience of both empirical and modelling approaches is also a merit.

Regarding teaching proficiency, the following will be taken into account:
•experience of planning, conducting and evaluating teaching
•experience of supervision and examination at doctoral level
•ability (capacity) to integrate research and a scientific approach in teaching activities.

In addition, the following skills will be taken into account:
•to develop and lead activities and mentor staff at university level
•to communicate and collaborate
•to interact with relevant stakeholders outside academia to take new knowledge into practical use.

Equal attention will be paid to the assessment of teaching proficiency and the assessment of academic skills.
