Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Clinical Associate Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry (Ref.: 498771), to commence as soon as possible on a four-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second four-year fixed-term contract.

The HKU Faculty of Dentistry is the only dental school in Hong Kong and is the only one in Greater China that uses English as the medium of instruction. The Faculty offers both undergraduate and postgraduate dental education, which is internationally renowned. The Faculty’s strategic research themes are Biomedical Engineering and Biofunctional Materials, Oral Microbiome and Health Initiative, Population Oral Health, and Smart Health Technology and Potentially Malignant Oral Disease. The high quality of the Faculty’s teaching and learning, clinical services and research excellence have won global recognition, as evidenced by the Faculty’s World Number One Ranking by the QS World University Ranking by Subject in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. The Faculty also plays an important role in public and professional education through its knowledge exchange activities as well as in dental and oral health research, and promotions in international, regional and local communities.

The Faculty aims at fostering research in healthcare artificial intelligence (AI) across multiple disciplines with the Faculty of Engineering, and is seeking a high caliber candidate with a strong research background in clinical AI. The appointee is expected to participate in the joint research centre on clinical AI with the Faculty of Engineering on one or more of the four research themes of the Faculty of Dentistry. The objective is to apply AI to solve relevant clinical problems in dentistry with a lasting impact. Potential applications of AI may range from computer vision, conversational AI, disease classification, predictive and value-based dentistry, surgical planning, robotics and/or autonomous manufacturing.

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Dentistry, clinical specialist or equivalent status, and a Ph.D. degree or equivalent. They should also have (i) proven evidence for quality research, publications in high quality international journals, and local and regional recognition for scholarship and professional expertise; (ii) demonstrated ability in undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical practice and research; (iii) active participation in Faculty and University affairs; and (iv) solid experience in knowledge exchange (KE) activities and leadership in professional education programs or community engagement.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will also be provided as applicable.
