The Research Institute at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is seeking an outstanding Scientist/Senior Scientist, who is committed to developing and applying machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and computational approaches to imaging science from cells to organs. The position will include an accompanying appointment in a relevant department at The University of Toronto (UofT), including but not limited to Computer Science or Medical Biophysics. Joint appointments may also be held at The Vector Institute for artificial intelligence (www.vectorinstitute.ai).
Candidates must have a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent, as well as significant (3 – 6 years) postdoctoral research experience and a record of outstanding scientific accomplishments and technical innovation in imaging science. The successful candidate will initiate and maintain an original, competitive, and independently funded research program with evidence of international caliber, including joint grants, presentations or publications in peer reviewed journals that will develop and apply advanced computational and AI methods relevant to range of imaging modalities including cellular (i.e., microscopy), tissue (MRI), and functional (fMRI; MEG) approaches to investigate questions related to health and disease.
The Scientist/Senior Scientist will have the opportunity to create and apply cutting edge machine learning and computational approaches to imaging science at one of the largest research pediatric hospitals in the world. Collegial interaction will be an important element in success. Candidates should have a strong track record of productivity and innovation in both methods development and application as well as an established record of collaboration and interdisciplinary research, including: strong publication record in machine learning, published peer-reviewed manuscripts, presentations at internationally recognized scientific conferences, a demonstrable track record of developing novel algorithms, solutions, and delivering/deploying prototypes/projects, and developing machine learning models and machine learning frameworks that have had impact in real life production. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A competitive benefits package is being offered along with support for relocation expenses.
The successful candidates will be appointed as a Scientist or Senior Scientist in the Research Institute and are expected to qualify for an academic cross-appointment as an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in an appropriate department at the University of Toronto. To practice as an MD, the successful candidate will have to obtain an appropriate Certificate of Registration from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (license to practice), and appropriate Visa (if applicable), by the job start date.
The successful candidates’ research programs will be housed at the SickKids Research Institute in the state-of-the-art Peter Gilgan Centre for Research & Learning (686 Bay Street, Toronto, Canada), located in the Discovery District in the heart of downtown Toronto. The position offers a unique environment for medical science discoveries, with nine teaching and research hospitals and the University of Toronto, Canada’s largest university, in close proximity. SickKids is fully affiliated with the UofT, and our researchers benefit from the extensive research facilities at the UofT and other affiliated institutions.
Appropriately qualified candidates may be nominated for a Canada Research Chair. A Tier 1 Chair nominee must be a full professor or associate professor who is expected to be promoted to the full professor level within 2 years. A Tier 2 Chair nominee should be within ten years of receiving their PhD. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.
