DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. More than 2400 employees work at our two locations Hamburg and Zeuthen in science, technology and administration.
Ultrafast lasers are key to a large variety of research efforts at DESY. They are used to generate and manipulate electron beams at the free electron laser facilities FLASH and XFEL and are essential for most of the science experiments at those facilities typically realized via pump-probe experiments. In particular, they are key for all laser-based compact accelerator R&D activities at DESY. The exploration of a novel, potentially disruptive laser technology for laser-based electron acceleration is the focus of a new research activity. The technology, multi-pass spectral broadening followed by post-compression, is currently rapidly spreading across the ultrafast laser community, and enables to use readily available cost and energy efficient picosecond lasers to generate few femtosecond pulses with high conversion efficiencies and at high average power. For this project shared between the DESY accelerator division and the photon science division, we are seeking a self-driven, highly motivated laser scientist.
Develop a high average power and high peak-power few-cycle laser source employing extreme-scale post-compressionAdvance laser post-compression technology to large compression factors, high throughput and few-cycle pulse durationsContribute to first electron acceleration experiments

Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY operates flexible work schemes. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. Vacant positions at DESY are in general open to part-time-work. During each application procedure DESY will assess whether the post can be filled with part-time employees.
