DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. More than 2400 employees work at our two locations Hamburg and Zeuthen in science, technology and administration.
The unique properties of the European XFEL electron beam offers the possibility to test quantum electro-dynamics (QED) in the critical field regime, never probed before. This critical field was predicted by Schwinger and can be achieved within the rest frame of the XFEL electron beam by an interaction of the electrons with a high-intensity laser pulse. The LUXE Experiment is currently starting to evaluate the feasibility of such an experiment to test strong-field QED at the European XFEL. This experiment combines interdisciplinary expertise and needs to be designed such that it is fully parasitic to standard XFEL operation. The high-intensity laser system that will interact with the electron beam is a critical component of the project.
Develop a concept and design for the high-intensity TW-scale laser to interact with the electron beamCoordinate the development of the laser system with partner Helmholtz Institutes and CentresDevelop the framework of the experiment and the setup in close interaction with theorists and all contributing disciplines and groupsDevelop concepts for precise on-target characterization of the high-intensity laser pulse
PhD in physics (laser physics)Experience in high-intensity laser physicsPreferably, skills in modeling high-power laser systemsTeamwork abilitiesPreferably, good knowledge of English
Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY operates flexible work schemes. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. Vacant positions at DESY are in general open to part-time-work. During each application procedure DESY will assess whether the post can be filled with part-time employees.
