About the team/job
EMBL Grenoble runs a protein expression facility that uses insect and mammalian cells as host organisms. The facilities have high internal usage by EMBL scientists for production of proteins and complexes for structural studies but are also open to other local researchers in the context of the Grenoble Partnership for Structural Biology (https://www.psb-grenoble.eu). The facilities are also used to perform a wide range of functional cell-based assays relevant to the projects of local scientists.
The successful candidate will train new users, provide technical assistance and troubleshoot challenging protein expression and purification experiments. In addition, the post holder will be involved in developing new protocols for protein expression and may be involved in specific in-house research projects. In the future, the facility may also open more broadly to external users.
Besides overseeing day to day operation, maintaining supplies, servicing as well as upgrading the equipment of the facility, the candidate will committedly keep abreast of evolving protein expression methods and facilitate their implementation at the Outstation, including by closely interacting with the EMBL Protein Expression and Purification Facility in Heidelberg and with European protein production and purification networks. Occasional travel to other EMBL sites or to international meetings will constitute part of the duties as well as reporting and outreach activities.
Applicants should have a Technical, Master or PhD degree in biochemistry or a related field. Skills in eukaryotic cell culture, molecular biology, protein expression and purification are required and, in particular, demonstrable experience in insect cell expression using baculovirus. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, as well as reactivity are essential in order to provide a high-quality service to users. Additionally, the ability to interact with a varied multicultural scientific community is required.
