The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Associate Director for its National Ferret Research and Resource Center (NFRRC). This position would be at the rank of Research Associate Professor or Research Professor in the non-tenure track. The successful candidate is expected to have the skill set and initiative necessary to ultimately transition to the Directorship of the NFRRC and become its Principal Investigator on applications for research funding.
The NFRRC is an international leader in genetic engineering of ferrets, producing ferret lines that allow for: conditional regulation of gene expression; fate mapping of stem cells; and the modeling of human disease (17 such models have been created to date). Historically, the focus of the NFRRC has been on lung diseases, including cystic fibrosis and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. However, the NFRRC is considering expansion into additional research areas.
The Associate Director will participate in creating the vision for the planned expansion, as well as the long-term sustainability of the NFRRC, by working with Foundations that support disease research as well as a company that manages the breeding of transgenic ferret models. Favorable candidate attributes would include: knowledge and experience in genetics and animal studies; familiarity with the cultures of academia, pharmaceutical, and/or medical research environments; and experience managing research teams in either of these environments.
- Working closely with the Director to coordinate strategic and operational efforts, and to influence and advise personnel across all key service functions (i.e., development, study design, regulatory, material transfer, and access to models by academics and industry) to ensure that they are strategically aligned and that service execution is seamless.
- Communicating with the Director and Oversight Committees to address program needs, issues, resources, and recommendations, and to ensure that reporting to NIH and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is clear and effective.
- Coordinating team efforts to facilitate timely collaborative interactions and studies in ferret models.
- Coordinating material transfer agreements with industrial and academic users by working closely with University Division of Sponsored Programs and managing the partnerships and subcontracts whereby the dissemination and use of ferret models are funded.
- In collaboration with the Director, developing strategies that ensure long-term sustainability of the NFRRC that are consistent with the shared vision of funding partners.
- Driving the setting and prioritization of team objectives and ensuring adherence to plans and strategies.
- Creating a positive team environment by instilling trust and ensuring clear and transparent communications to align with the overall goal/vision of the NFRRC.
- Assisting users of the NFRRC in obtaining the scientific information and letters of support needed for their proposals to fund collaborative research.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in the academic, pharmaceutical, and/or medical research environments.
- Proven ability to lead and influence strategy planning and implementation in a research environment.
- Ability to think proactively and strategically, with strong decision-making skills.
- Experience in managing academic and/or corporate partnerships.
- Proven ability to function effectively across a matrix organization with multiple stakeholders and constituents, and to focus teams to work towards their goals.
- Strong leadership and communication (including presentation and writing) skills, with demonstrated success influencing personnel in multiple key service functions and at multiple levels of responsibility.
- Strong skills in staff management and experience in mentoring.
- Ability to foster a collaborative environment, with outstanding relationship-building skills.
- Experience working with animal models and ability to quickly master new areas of biology.
Education: Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M.
