Location: York
Salary: £40,322
Hours: Full Time
Ref Number: 7961
Contract Type: Fixed Term
Closing date: 1 December 2019

The job:
Applications are invited for a one year Research Fellowship scheme funded by the University of York’s Centre for Future Health (CFH) which is supported by the University and the Wellcome Trust. The scheme is intended to provide a stepping stone into a fully established, independent and externally-funded research career for the most able early career researchers working in the area of health. The scheme is open to individuals from across the sciences, social sciences and the arts and humanities and those with interdisciplinary interests are especially encouraged to apply. Those who have had a career break and wish to re-establish their research career are also invited to apply.

Who we are:
The University of York has an outstanding reputation for biomedical and health-related research with expertise right across the critical pathway, from fundamental science in the laboratory to health services and patient care. Public health and medical humanities research are equally areas of strength. World-class departments and research centres, including the York Biomedical Research Institute (YBRI), and a growing cadre of internationally-recognised research leaders have both inspired significant research achievements and the translation of this research for public benefit. Strong links with the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) further enable improvements in diagnosis, treatment and care to transform the lives of patients in the local region and beyond.

What you will do:
You will participate actively in the planning, management and advancement of an identified independent programme of research in an area relating to human health, and ensure effective management and use of the research resources that will be made available to you. You will contribute to, and lead on the production of research outputs and research outcomes. You will be expected, within the time-frame of the Fellowship and with the support of your elected mentor(s), to apply for a prestigious externally-funded intermediate fellowship to continue your research career at the University.

Who you are:
You should have a PhD or equivalent in the area of health at the time of applying and have research expertise that complements and enhances your host department’s research and impact strategies. Some degree of previous professional experience at another institution, academic or non-academic, will be looked on favourably. Experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research and participation in the planning and advancement of research projects is essential. You will also need to be able to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience, including academics from other disciplines, non-academics and the public, both orally and in writing. The selection panel will be looking for a strong track record in the dissemination of scholarly work and a clear vision for your personal and career development.

The scheme offers a salary of £40,322 plus a generous support allowance for equipment, consumables, travel and conference attendance. The posts are available for a fixed term period of one year from March 2020. You must be available to take up the post at this time.

It is anticipated that two awards will be made subject to the suitability of applicants.

If you are interested in applying, you are encouraged to make informal enquiries to the CFH Administrator, Dr Philip Kerrigan (; + 44 (0)1904 328876).
