We are currently seeking Post Doc candidates to investigate mechanisms of iron-altered hematopoiesis within the Iron Research Program of the Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute, the research branch of the New York Blood Center. In particular, candidates will study the impact of iron overload and deficiency on the pathogenesis of human hematological diseases. The candidate will perform cutting-edge research that integrates human biology and hematology with novel therapies using innovative technologies and approaches including classic molecular, cellular, and biochemical techniques, as well as modern imaging techniques, sequencing and single cell analysis techniques, bioinformatics, and preclinical in vitro and in vivo models.
• Performing daily molecular bench work
• Handling and working with mice on a regular basis for routine experiments
• Managing mouse colonies including genotyping
• Mammalian cell culture (primary and cell lines) and isolation/preparation of bone marrow cells and peripheral blood cells
• Working independently on a research project under the supervision of the Lab Head
• Maintaining lab files related to the general lab
• Reporting research progress while maintaining up to date knowledge of literature in relevant fields
• Summarizing experimental data, as well as assisting in drafting figures, results and methods for presentation and publication
• Maintaining laboratory apparatus and instruments
• Identifying and implementing process improvements
• Handling other related functions as necessary
To qualify, you must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree, along with prior research experience, including handling and working with mice and basic laboratory techniques, including PCR, Western blotting, ELISA, flow cytometry, genotyping and cell-based aseptic techniques. Good demonstrated record of high impact research and a strong scholarly record will be expected, as will knowledge of molecular biology techniques including PCR analysis, ELISA, western blotting; flow cytometry; and cell-based assays, including sterile techniques. In addition, the candidate has to show the following abilities: ability to work independently with minimal supervision; strong attention to detail in all work processes; participate in team meetings and provide input into experimental design; work in a strong team environment; identify problems in a timely manner, evaluate options and implement solutions. A history of working with multi-disciplinary team is preferred.
