Description

The DEWA R&D Center is looking to fill in the vacancy of a researcher to do Solar resource assessment and forecasting.


Context

Photovoltaic (PV) production forecasting essentially consists of predicting the cloud cover, and subsequently solar irradiance at ground level, at a given site. To produce such forecasts, DEWA R&D uses a multitude of technologies, such as camera-based and satellite-based methods, but also numerical weather prediction (NWP), as well as statistical and machine learning methods. The accuracy of solar irradiance forecasts depends on a multitude of factors, such as the forecast horizon, the climate at Dubai, the applied error metrics, the temporal resolution of the forecasts, the length of the considered period, and so on. Estimating the forecast error for a given project before performing the forecasts is difficult and requires a database of forecast errors under certain conditions.


Objective

The goal of this position is to improve and develop solar forecasting models, analyze ground radiometric measured data at our station and analyzing PV yield output data from the different plants. Site adapting the data and model to improve accuracy of the forecast. To do so, the candidate will work closely together with DEWA R&D’s experts in meteorology, atmospheric physics, radiometry, solar energy, remote sensing, machine learning, deep learning, and geographic information systems (GIS).


The tasks involved include but are not limited to the following:

  • Bibliographic research about solar irradiance and PV forecast.
  • Creation of a forecast models based on deep learning, numerical weather forecast models and machine learning.
  • Evaluation of forecast errors under various conditions.
  • Site adaptation of models using machine learning and deep learning.
  • Writing documentation.

The candidate should be comfortable working as member of a dynamic, research-oriented group with several ongoing concurrent projects across multiple areas but also manage individual tasks independently. Thinking out of the box and comfort in bridging cross-disciplinary silos to conduct innovative research are strongly desirable qualities.


Basic Qualifications:

  • MSC in a related discipline e.g. Energy systems, Computer Science, Atmospheric Physics, Solar energy, Engineering Systems


Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in a related discipline e.g. Energy systems, Computer Science, Atmospheric Physics, Solar energy, Engineering Systems
  • Scopus-indexed publication record
  • Knowledge and experience in meteorology, atmospheric science, Geo-informatics, Applied Mathematics, Machine learning, Deep learning, big data, solar energy, radiometry, remote sensing, numerical modelling, Geographic information system.
  • Familiarity with the concepts of geographic modelling
  • Experience with one or more of these tools would be a plus: Python, MATLAB, R, shell scripting, SQL, Advance knowledge of Linux, web development.
