Engender Technologies Limited is a New Zealand company that has developed a new technology to separate X- and Y-bearing bull sperm cells. The technology is a sort-on-a-chip approach with integrated microfluidic and photonic components. It is expected to be low cost and cause minimal discernible damage to the cells. A full-time research position is immediately available. The successful candidate will join the Biology team and work in a multidisciplinary research environment. The candidate must be committed to advancing technology goals on aggressive timelines through effective collaboration in a team environment. You are expected to contribute at the bench as well as at strategic levels. You will participate in regular training programmes. Applicant should be willing to think critically, eager to learn new techniques and skills, continuously survey and review existing and latest literature, able to work independently, design and execute experiments, conduct detailed data analyses, present data to project teams and senior management. Travelling is required. Must be able to occasionally work irregular hours.

Job duties (other duties may be assigned)

  • Lead the design and execution of molecular and cellular experiments, including thorough evaluations of a ddPCR assay
  • Critically analyse and evaluate the performance parameters of the ddPCR assay, and make recommendations on process improvements that will complement company technology
  • Assist in the development of genetics-related SOPs, refining existing ones, and other control processes and practices
  • You will also contribute to routine procedures, including (training provided)
  • Semen handling and analysis
  • Sperm preps for testing, sorting, IVF, and cryopreservation
  • Process semen and embryo samples, including transportation of samples, gDNA isolation, DNA quality analysis, and quantitative PCR and data analysis
  • Independently travel to slaughterhouse to collect and transport samples back to the research laboratory
  • Assisting in IVFs
  • Work closely with the team to resolve issues, assist in the R & D process, and improve biological techniques surrounding sexing, DNA isolation processes, semen handling and cryopreservation
  • Troubleshooting and identifying areas for process improvement
  • Assist in summarising data and presenting them into tables and graphs
  • Keep abreast of scientific literature in the field and implement modalities and protocols
  • Conducts literature searches and summarises information in written and presentation format
  • Maintain accurate and detailed lab books, records, and inventory
  • Offer day-to-day support (maintaining laboratory supplies, maintenance of laboratory equipment and environment, monitor lab safety, prepare media and buffers, routine cleaning)
  • Present and write regular progress reports
  • Attends team meetings for experimental planning and present results in project meetings

Essential skills

  • Multidisciplinary knowledge and experience in Animal Genetics, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology
  • Demonstrate mastery of basic molecular and cellular techniques – cloning, DNA handling, preparations and analysis, restriction digest, RT-PCR, PCR, real-time PCR, primer design, multiple sequence alignment
  • Deep knowledge and hands-on experience in characterising real-time PCR assays, including data analysis and statistical procedures
  • Exceptional liquid handling techniques
  • Willingness to travel to and enter the slaughterhouse to collect organ samples is a prerequisite
  • Exceptional time management and organisational skills, with proven ability to be able to organise and schedule their own work
  • Proven track record in generating and analysing high quality data
  • Ability to autonomously investigate and analyse raw data, and extrapolate conclusions
  • Highly motivated and work with initiative
  • Take full ownership of their core responsibilities and will be comfortable with those responsibilities evolving with the changing needs of the company
  • Ability to troubleshoot laboratory processes
  • Outstanding work ethics and high personal integrity, including documentation of mistakes and variations in the procedure that may impact results and appropriate documentation of results
  • High attention to detail when performing routine tasks
  • Experience collaborating with others and effectively working in teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Comfortable setting strict deadlines for themselves and the ability meet them
  • Take on a variety of duties when necessary to meet project deadlines
  • Must be highly adaptable, flexible, and be willing to contribute wherever needed
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Knowledge and experience with biocontainment facilities and procedures, laboratory safety, biosecurity, and decontamination

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with:
  • Droplet digital PCR and data analysis (highly advantageous)
  • Mammalian cell culture
  • Various staining protocols, microscopy, and imaging
  • IVF
  • Setting up functional research laboratories
  • Image analysis using Metamorph/ImageJ/Photoshop
  • Evaluating cell viability, cytotoxicity, and apoptosis using FACS
