Research Associate in Volcano Geodesy– 2020

Applications are invited for a NERC- and NSF- funded Research Associate, initially for 18 months, based in the School of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol. This position is linked to the NERC RiftVolc Project and the NSFGEO-NERC Collaborative Research: “Linking geophysics and volcanic gas measurements to constrain the transcrustal magmatic system at the Altiplano-Puna deformation anomaly.”

The RA will be working with partner institutions in the UK (Universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Leeds, Oxford, and Southampton and the British Geological Survey), US (Cornell University, University of New Mexico, Washington State University), Bolivia (Observatorio San Calixto) and Ethiopia (University of Addis Ababa) to deliver broad-scale, multi-disciplinary research projects related to understanding volcanic processes and hazards in contrasting tectonic environments.

The RA’s task within this project will be to analyse geodetic data, primarily from the Global Positioning System. They will be working with data from established continuous and campaign GPS networks around two volcanoes in Ethiopia (Aluto and Corbetti) and one volcano in Bolivia (Uturuncu). They will link the GPS observations with timeseries data from InSAR, and with other geophysical observations including microgravity surveys, seismic observations and magnetotelluric data. They will also perform data modelling using analytical and numerical mathematical techniques including the use of finite-element analysis. Doing so will provide a holistic interpretation of the magmatic and hydrothermal processes occurring at these volcanoes and enable a comparison between sources of long-term volcanic deformation in contrasting tectonic environments. There may also be the opportunities to join multidisciplinary field trips to the Main Ethiopian Rift in January 2020 and the Bolivian Andes in the autumn of 2020 to collect GPS and microgravity data.
