The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) carries out interdisciplinary research in secure, reliable and trustworthy Information and Communication systems and services, often in collaboration with industrial, governmental or international partners. The centre is currently expanding its research activities in the area of secure and trustworthy Machine Learning systems in the context of Computational Linguistics and NLP and invites applications from highly motivated PhD holders to pursue research in close collaboration with our academic partners.

Research Associate (Postdoc) in Logic, Strategic Reasoning and Computational Linguistics (M/F)

Your Role

The successful candidate will join the SaToSS group led by Prof. Sjouke Mauw. They will contribute to the project “Spin and Bias in Language Analyzed in News and Text (SLANT)” which is jointly funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) Luxembourg and Agence National de la Recherche (ANR) France, and will be carried out in collaboration with researchers at the University of Toulouse and INRIA Lille, France. The aim of the project is to characterize bias in textual data and automatically detect such bias using tools and techniques from Mathematical Logic, Game Theory, Computational Linguistics and Machine Learning. The successful candidate will perform the following tasks:
• Shaping research directions and producing results along the following directions:
- Analysis and interpretation of textual data
- Formal modelling and analysis of discourse
- Logical and strategic analysis of dialogue and discourse
- Analysis of ML algorithms in context of their security guarantees
• Attracting funding in co-operation with industrial partners
• Coordinating research projects and delivering outputs
• Teaching and administration duties in the SaToSS group
• Providing guidance to PhD and MSc students
• Disseminating results through scientific publications
• Organizing relevant workshops and demonstrations

Your Profile

• A PhD degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field
• Knowledge and competitive research record in one or more of the following topics: Mathematical Game Theory, Formal Verification and Logic, Algorithms, Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing
• A strong mathematical background and an analytical mind
• Experience with machine learning algorithms
• Commitment, sincerity and ability to work in a team
• Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory

The University offers a two-year employment contract which may be extended up to five years depending on fundings.
