Research Associate – Mass Spectrometry-based Metabolomics (m/f)

Applications are invited for a position as Research Associate available in the Metabolomics Platform (Enzymology and Metabolism group, headed by Dr. C. Linster) at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, University of Luxembourg.
The Metabolomics Platform is a research facility operated by two postdoctoral scientists within the LCSB. Its main goal is to offer analytical services to research groups at the LCSB, Luxembourg and abroad. Our vision is to not only act as a measurement facility but to offer consulting in experimental design for metabolism related analyses to provide optimal results. It is also to provide and develop analytical methods to address a broad spectrum of biological questions. The unit comprises state-of-the-art instruments including three LC-MS (Q-Exactive, Q-Trap and IM-Q-ToF), two GC-MS, two HPLCs and one YSI Biochemistry Analyzer.
Your Role and Responsibilities
- Design/perform various experiments using core technologies such as LC-MS and GC-MS
- Analyze data and write reports, protocols, SOPs and other documentation (LIMS)
- Develop extraction and analytical methods for biological sample matrices
- Read the scientific literature to keep up with latest technological developments in the field
- Maintain and troubleshoot analytical instruments as needed
- Critically review the experimental design of projects which include core technologies.
- Interact and collaborate with scientists at all levels (PhD students, postdocs, principal investigators, professors)
- Training, supervision and daily management of lab technicians
- Participate in grant writing.
- Prepare and submit scientific material for peer reviewed publications independently or in collaboration with other researchers
- Present the platform and research results in national and international meetings to promote the services and disseminate new findings

- Ph.D. in life sciences with focus on analytical chemistry
- Strong theoretical and practical competences in analytical chemistry and especially mass spectrometry and chromatography (LC-MS/MS and GC-MS)
- Strong hands-on experience with chromatography and mass spectrometry of small molecules (method development, measurement of large sample sets, etc.)
- Experience in sample preparation from multiple biological (potentially infectious) matrices (e.g. blood, urine, stool, tissues, cells, bacteria, yeast)
- Solid experience with computational metabolomics data analysis tools and strong notions in statistical methods for metabolomics data analysis
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to perform team-oriented as well as independent work
- Good knowledge and understanding of metabolism and previous experience(s) in life science-related research will be considered as a strong plus
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are a must
- Participation in biomedical and biotechnological research projects supported by the national research fund (FNR) and the European Union (H2020)
