Job Summary

Applications are invited for two Research Associates in Single Cell Analysis and Mitochondrial Ageing to work in the group of Professor Nick Jones. Funding is available for each 36-month post to be extended by a further 24 months and this extension is anticipated.

The appointees will work on a Wellcome funded project, alongside two experimental post-docs (also over 5 years), in the labs of Professors Patrick Chinnery and Maria Spillantini in the Cambridge Mitochondrial Biology Unit and Cambridge Clinical Neuroscience. The project will investigate, through single cell multiomics, the interplay of mitochondrial content and gene-expression with both ageing and Parkinson’s disease in the brain in both mouse models and human.

You will work directly with Nick Jones: experience in Bayesian inference is required; familiarity with single cell analysis is highly desirable; familiarity with topics in statistical genetics, variant calling and sequencing is desirable. The Imperial team will be linked to both the Centre for the Mathematics of Precision Healthcare and Imperial’s Machine Learning initiative I-X (which Professor Jones co-directs). The appointment will have strong links between Imperial College London and University of Cambridge with travel between the two sites throughout the appointment.


Duties and Responsibilities

• Inference challenges with single cell transcriptomics, scATAC-seq, variant calling, joint single cell ATAC and RNA data.
• Designing new experiments alongside the two experimental post-docs.
• Exploring new approaches using causal inference.
• Processing pre-existing datasets which are both public and in house.
• Exploring combinations of lineage inference and gene-expression clustering.
• Exploration of appropriate models from statistical genetics.


Essential Requirements

The essential requirements for this post are as follows:

• Hold (or be near completion of) a PhD degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or closely aligned disciplines, or an equivalent level of professional qualification.
• Strong interest in the project
• Strong track record of high-quality independent research, commensurate with career stage

Experience in:

• Bayesian Inference

Experience and knowledge in one or more of the following techniques:

• Computational Statistics
• Single Cell transcriptomics
• Single Cell variant calling
• Statistical Genetics


Further Information

The position is full time and fixed term for 36 months with the possibility of a 24 month extension. You will be based at South Kensington Campus and travel to University of Cambridge will be required.

The expected start date is 1 October 2022 or soon thereafter.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within £36,694 – £39,888 salary range per annum.
