Summary The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II is to provide technical assistance in carrying out various research projects for the Microbiome Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) developing core facility under the Directorship of Dr. Robert Jenq, M.D. and co-Directorship of Dr. Samuel Shelburne, M.D. We are seeking a highly motivated enthusiastic person to help a primary investigator/clinician in a new core facility designed to address an unmet need in the institution with numerous opportunities to learn cutting-edge cancer research and carry out various research projects and assist in managing clinical specimens, clinical data, as well as animal experiments. KEY FUNCTIONS Isolate DNA, RNA and proteins and quantify using standard molecular methods. Perform PCR and deep sequencing and operate laboratory apparatus and equipment to dissect the bacterial and genetic parameters in cancer and cancer treatment settings. Assist in experiments that require knowledge of molecular biology, cell-based assays, immunology, flow cytometry, ELISA, tissue cell culture techniques. Assist in tracking and process patient and mouse fecal samples in the anaerobic chamber for analysis. Conduct mouse experiment and utilize genetically engineered mouse models and carry out research projects to translate basic science discoveries towards therapeutic treatment. Document experimental results and maintain an organized laboratory notebook. Record and interpret data obtained in accordance with methods requested. Assist in general laboratory operation, ensures the laboratory is prepared for experiments, perform related laboratory maintenance such as maintaining and cleaning equipment and assisting with monitoring and stocking supplies, preparation of stock solutions and other reagents. Order centralized supplies. Reads literature and confers with supervisor regarding new procedures. May instruct other staff and students in basic laboratory techniques. Follow safe laboratory practices. Work in a clinical and research setting.
