Introduction

INL is seeking a highly qualified Junior Fellow to work for a collaborative project in the area of sensors for water monitoring, whose main responsibility will be to support the Water Quality Research Group at INL to develop its ongoing research on sensors for detection of engineered inorganic nanoparticles, i.e. titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs), in aquaculture water.

Job Role & Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to work, under the supervision of a team of experienced researchers in the area, on the development of portable detection systems based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based sensors integrated with sample preparation. The candidate is also expected to consistently perform regular toxicity testing of NPs. The successful applicant will be in charge of SERS substrate design for TiO2 and Ag NPs detection, prepare contaminated dispersion and samples from aquaculture water, and carry out sample treatment and preparation for analysis.

The selected applicant will collaborate with international multidisciplinary teams and is expected to produce several technical and scientific documentation and work planning.

Job Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

MSc in Nanotechnology/ Material science/ Chemistry or similar.

Experience in surface chemistry, and sensors.

Experience in synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials (i.e. electron microscopies, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and sample preparation).

Experience in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and SERS substrate design.

Experience in microfluidics (fabrication and modelling) and nanotoxicity will be positively evaluated.
