Job Summary

The Department of Chemistry is seeking applications for up to three senior academic positions starting in the next 6-18 months. The positions are open to outstanding candidates at all levels of seniority whose research and teaching interests are blues skies research and fundamental discovery aligned with seeking solutions for industrial and global challenges across the full breadth of Chemistry. You are expected to broaden the Department’s research capabilities, while complementing our existing strengths (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/chemistry/research/

You will contribute to the academic mission of Imperial College London to deliver world-class scholarship, education and research. In addition, you will be required to contribute towards administration within the Department.

Summary of the Post

You will have evidence of engagement in high-quality international-level research, and a proven ability to obtain research funding that is appropriate for the level you are applying for. Your work may fall within any of the six departmental themes of Synthesis and Catalysis; Chemical Biology and Healthcare; Environmental and Green Chemistry; Energy; Imaging, Sensing and Analytical Chemistry; and Materials and Molecular Design. Possible areas include, but are not restricted to digital chemistry and dial-a-molecule approaches, polymer chemistry and analytical chemistry.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To undertake original research at a high international standard in the chemical sciences
  • To publish the results of this research in internationally recognised peer reviewed journals
  • To obtain external funding to support the research from Government Research Councils, Charity, Industry and other national and international funding agencies
  • To contribute to teaching and examination on appropriate courses of the undergraduate Chemistry degree within the Department of Chemistry
  • To supervise MPhil/PhD research students
  • To undertake appropriate administrative tasks as directed by the Head of Department
  • To undertake necessary training and/or development

Essential requirements

  • A good honours degree and a PhD (or equivalent) in Chemistry or in a discipline that underpins your research interest.
  • An international reputation for research and innovation, underpinned by a record of first class publication
  • The potential to raise significant external research funding from a variety of sources to maintain and enhance the College’s research activities
  • Extensive previous experience of university teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and a record of successful postgraduate student supervision.
  • Evidence of being able to establish and lead a coherent research programme
  • Experience in financial management, management of staff and institutional promotion, promoting the profile of your research both internally and externally.
  • Ability to communicate well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively
  • Ability to present yourself to potential funders with authority and coherence
  • Ability to teach effectively at both undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and with other research groups nationally and internationally

Summary of the levels:

Reader

  • To be appointed at Reader level, you will have extensive professional experience. Individuals will have a substantial reputation in their field and make a significant impact on their discipline or profession through effective and innovative academic leadership in research and/or education. Roles which focus on research will involve an established national and international reputation through original research work and a clear record of impact shown, for example in substantial and sustained research income. Individuals will combine an established research profile with a focus on teaching, research student supervision, course development and departmental leadership and management activity.

Professor

  • To be appointed at Professorial level, you will have internationally recognised leadership and a substantial and sustained reputation in research and education by outstanding contributions to its advancement. In research, there will be a sustained international reputation based on an extensive track record of research with a major influence on the discipline or profession and a significant impact shown, for example in sustained influence on research income. In education, specialists at this level will have broadened and deepened their impact on teaching methods and systems, both internally and externally and there will be evidence of creative and scholarly work which has had a significant impact. For this role, there will generally be significant leadership responsibilities on behalf of the department and/or the College and a significant management contribution.
