The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences and DESY jointly invite applications for a
PROFESSORSHIP (W2) FOR DETECTOR DEVELOPMENT IN PARTICLE PHYSICS
commencing as soon as possible, ref. no. 2331/W2.
The professorship is part of the newly founded Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe at Universität Hamburg and DESY, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments. The Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe brings leading researchers from the fields of mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology together to conduct research on mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology.
We are seeking applications from internationally recognized candidates for the development of detection techniques and their application to particle physics experiments at colliders. The successful candidate should play a leading role in shaping and developing the field of detector technologies at DESY and Universität Hamburg for experiments in particle physics with a focus on novel technologies. We expect leading contributions, for example in the field of modern semiconductor sensor material designs, and/or 3D integration, preferably with a strong interest in tracking detectors. The candidate should participate in research in and the design for future particle physics experiments. Active participation in technology transfer activities is expected.
In their application, applicants are expected to indicate to which of the University’s core research areas, emerging fields, or profile initiatives (https://www.uni-hamburg.de/en/forschung/forschungsprofil/forschungsschwerpunkte.html) their research can best be assigned. Duties include participation in one or more of the core research areas, emerging fields, or profile initiatives.
The professorship involves a teaching obligation of two hours per week per semester at Universität Hamburg.
Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.
The applicant must have research experience in experimental particle physics or a related field, as well as a Habilitation or an equivalent scientific qualification.
A non-German-speaking post holder is expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment providing he or she does not have the requisite skills when starting.
