The Faculty of Medicine at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany, invites applications for a temporary (5 years) professorship with tenure-track to a permanent W2 professorship position of a
Professor (W2) in Molecular Mitochondrial Biology and Metabolism
at the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I (Chairman: Prof. Dr. Andreas Reichert) starting 1st March 2021.
The call is aimed at internationally well recognized personalities in basic molecular research in the field of mitochondrial biology. One research aim to be further developed is to identify and elucidate molecular mechanisms that are linked to human diseases or ageing-related processes via mitochondrial dysfunctions and/or changes in energy metabolism. To this end, suitable models, new technologies and metabolism-related research approaches should be successfully applied and/or developed. The candidate has successfully dealt with these or related topics.
It is expected that the research focus of the candidate is fitting well and complementary to the research areas of ‘Mitochondrial quality control’, ‘Structure & function of mitochondrial membrane protein complexes’ and ‘energy metabolism’ already established at the institute. It is also desirable that the candidate is able to expand the spectrum of methods through proven experience in the field of metabolism research.
We are looking for a personality with an internationally recognised research profile, who has a proven track record of relevant publications and competitive acquisition of third-party funding. We expect a strong commitment to academic teaching and its further conceptual development, especially considering study programs for medicine and dentistry which face future adjustments of legal regulations. Experience in academic teaching for natural scientists and/or medical students at a university in the field of biochemistry or related subjects is required.
A requirement for the position is a completed university degree in natural sciences, medicine or comparable disciplines, a doctorate as well as a ‘Habilitation’ or equivalent qualification in the field of biochemistry / cell biology research. Furthermore, experience in the management of scientific organizational units, in personnel and staff management as well as in the establishment of collaborations is expected.
This professorship is not associated with clinical duties.
The appointee is expected to foster international research at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and contribute to its cooperative research projects (Collaborative Research Center 1116 “Master switches in cardiac ischemia”; Collaborative Research Center 1208 “Identity and dynamics of membrane systems – from molecules to cellular functions”; Collaborative Research Center Transregio 259 “Aortic Disease”; Manchot Graduate School “Molecules of infection”; Manchot research group „Decision making by means of methods of artificial intelligence“; Düsseldorf School of Oncology (DSO); International Research Training Groups IRTG 1902 „Intra- and Interorgan Communication of the Cardiovascular System”; Research Training Group 2576 “vivid – In vivo studies of the early development of type 2 diabetes”; Research Training Group „iBrain – Interdisciplinary Graduate School for Brain Research and Translational Neuroscience“; Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO-ABCD); German Consortium for translational Cancer Research (DKTK)). Cooperations with the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine IUF, German Diabetes Center Düsseldorf DDZ and the Research Center Jülich are welcome.
Applicants will be hired in accordance with the general prerequisites pertaining to service law of section 36 of the North Rhine-Westphalia University Act (Hochschulgesetz NRW) which require an aptitude for teaching, exceptional competence in research, and additional scientific achievements.
