DTU invites applications for a position as full professor in the research field Sustainability Assessment of Products, Technologies and Large-scale Systems. The professorship is affiliated with DTU Management’s section for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment (QSA). QSA is among the leading in the world in developing and applying life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to evaluate the environmental sustainability of products, technologies, and services. QSA offers an excellent research environment with around 25 international staff, postdocs, and PhD students.
The position is offered in the field of sustainability assessment focusing on one or more of the following research topics:
- Sustainability performance assessment of large-scale systems
- Development of absolute boundary perspectives in sustainability assessment based on carrying capacities of ecosystems, climate regulation or accessibility of finite resources to guide a shift from (eco-)efficiency to (eco-)effectiveness
- Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) modelling focusing on, e.g. spatiotemporal differentiation, damage modelling, and monetarization
- Advancing chemicals alternatives assessment and substitution, and chemicals assessment in Life Cycle Impact Assessment with a focus on filling in substance data gaps
- Combining risk- and sustainability assessment perspectives
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) assessment involving development of quantitative indicators and including weighting techniques for indicator results to provide operational policy support
- Environmentally extended input-output analysis, and hybridisation with product life cycle assessment (LCA) and dynamic assessments with a shift from retrospective to prospective perspective
Responsibilities and tasks
DTU defines its vision as to “strive for a sustainable future by developing value-creating technology for people” and the professor position targets current methodological challenges of life cycle assessment and sustainability assessment, facilitating a shift from a relative to an absolute sustainability perspective and moving from ‘better’ to ‘good enough’.
The position will allow you to train the next generation of engineers and researchers in the field of sustainability assessment, and to collaborate with researchers and stakeholders across sectors at the highest level including top-academic institutions around the world, European and international governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations, and industry. As part of your activities, you will be responsible for
- Building collaborations on development of technologies for sustainable transition with researchers from other departments across DTU
- Developing research proposals and applying for excellence funding and strategic funding
- Engaging and representing QSA in international network activities through leading international task forces (e.g. UNEP, EC-JRC, …) within your core field
The successful candidate is expected to take a lead role in developing, coordinating and performing teaching in sustainability assessment at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.
This position requires strong experience with interdisciplinary academic work along with technical and training skills to strengthen DTU’s research in quantitative sustainability assessment of products, technologies and large-scale systems. You will therefore bring the following:
- Strong expertise in one or several of the research topics specified for the position drawing on competence within several of the fields of sustainability science, systems science, economics or social science, with skills in e.g. life cycle thinking, macroeconomics and input-output analysis, systems dynamics modelling, foresight analysis, behavioural modelling, environmental impact assessment, environmental chemistry and toxicology, data analysis, or indicator development
- Experience in developing university courses at BSc, MSc, and/or PhD level
- Dedication to and efficiency in teaching and developing new and tailored courses at universities/at international workshops and conferences
- Expertise in developing operational, quantitative methods and tools within your core research field(s)
- A systematic in your approach to work with big data from various disciplines and understand the commonalities and differences between assessment fields
- Dedication to working with complex topics using a systems perspective
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:
- Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development
- Research impact and experience, funding track record and research vision
- Societal impact
- Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
- International impact and experience

Salary and terms of employment
