The National Centre for Nano Fabrication and Characterization at DTU Nanolab invites for applications for a position in nanostructured polymer surfaces.

DTU Nanolab conducts research-based technique, methodology and process development within nano fabrication and characterization from fundamental science to applications. DTU Nanolab consists of two facilities, a state-of-the-art cleanroom for nano fabrication, and a specially constructed building housing advanced electron microscopes for nano characterization. Both facilities are located at DTU’s Lyngby Campus.

The successful candidate is expected to lead the research and development of technologies to replicate custom fabricated nanostructures in polymer. These technologies are an important step to exploit the benefits of modern nanotechnology. Top-down structuring of materials at the nanoscale is an expensive and time consuming process. Nanostructured surfaces can have outstanding properties e.g. in terms of color, haptic and wetting. By transferring and replicating these structures from e.g. nanomachined silicon into polymer, we can profit from this technological development on a daily basis. This is especially relevant for biomedical devices that are often single use and therefore dependent on materials (polymer) and fabrication processes (e.g. injection molding).

Responsibilities and tasks
The appointed professor will work alongside DTU Nanolab’s scientific staff in general and will report to the head of DTU Nanolab’s Fabrication Section to ensure that DTU Nanolab contributes to and expand DTU’s existing research efforts through national and international collaboration.

This is a permanent appointment with the following primary areas of responsibility, where you will:

  • be responsible for the design, development, verification and application of novel nanostructured polymer surfaces
  • develop new technologies providing state of the art nano replicas in polymer and improve replication fidelity
  • demonstrate the applicability of replicated nanostructure polymer surfaces by introducing new surface functionalities allowing new and ground breaking applications
  • contribute to education and teaching within nanofabrication and characterization with emphasis on e-learning and online courses
  • contribute to outreach at all levels, both academic and public
  • contribute to DTUs innovation portfolio in terms of polymer nanosurfaces as well as polymer replication technologies and applications

An important task of this position is to secure national and international research funding in this area, which should lead to the establishment and maintenance of an internationally acknowledged research group in the described research field.

The successful candidate should be prepared to supervise PhD students and is expected to be involved in teaching activities related to BSc and MSc level students. For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

Qualifications
We expect the successful candidate to have a strong documented academic background within nanofabrication and surface physics and chemistry. You have a well documented track record in physic and chemistry of nanosurfaces as well as replication of nanostructures by a variety of technologies. Demonstrations of the applicability of said devices for biomedical purposes and lab on chip systems is an advantage.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

DTU Nanolab operates and maintains advanced processing equipment within 1350 m2, class 10-100, ISO 9001-certified, open access, pay-per-use cleanroom facilities. In a separate specially constructed building the center operates 8 state-of-the-art electron microscopes, among them four Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM) and a Dual Beam Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB SEM).
