The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. M2 holds one of Sweden’s most extensive simulator centres for navigation and propulsion of ships, as well as world class laboratories within combustion engineering and wind tunnels. The department also offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, to mention a few. In addition, professional education is performed on both a national and international level, with specifically designed mission training for different societal actors within our ambition for lifelong learning. The department continuously strives to establish a cooperation between academia, industry, and society, with a great focus on utilization of our research results. M2 is characterized by an international environment with employees and students from around the world, as well as outstanding research and world class education. M2 consists of seven different divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

Our vision is to enable sustainable transport with zero harmful emissions and we want to contribute to reaching this vision by performing research on highly efficient and ultra-clean propulsion systems. We are now looking for a Professor that can help us with this task using and developing computer simulation tools.

Information about the division
The division of Combustion and Propulsion Systems is one of seven divisions at the department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences. Our commitment is to generate knowledge and methods that the society needs to be able to develop highly efficient and ultra-clean internal combustion engines, taking exhaust after-treatment into account, and that use renewable/low carbon fuels and are a part of electrified/hybridized propulsion systems. In other words, to enable transport without toxic emissions by:
- educating top level engineers and scientists
- conducting groundbreaking spray, combustion, engine and propulsion system research
- strongly coupling experiment and simulation
- serving as a forum in which industry and academia can meet

Recently, the division has created three units:
1) Internal combustion engines and propulsion systems
2) Combustion and sprays
3) Engine, Spray and Hybrid Vehicle Laboratory

The Combustion and Spray unit consists of several senior researchers and PhD students who focus mainly on optical diagnostics of combustion and spray and simulation thereof. We are now opening a new position for a Professor specialized in engine, combustion and spray simulation, who will be a part of our team so that we together can accelerate the shift towards sustainable transport solutions. The professor we are looking for will also be the manager of this unit and provide the expertise required to lead, guide and develop the simulation activities. We have a proficient collaboration with industry and many of our projects are of applied nature. However, fundamental research needs to remain a vital part of our activities, not in the least in this unit

Major responsibilities
Developing engines for sustainable transportation systems requires predictive and fast simulation technologies. The division has a proficient track record in developing new CFD based models and methods for simulating combustion and spray atomization processes in reciprocating engines. The activities you mainly will be responsible for on a technical level are the ongoing simulation activities, mainly performed in OpenFoam and in some commercial codes (GT Power, Convergence, GT-Suite). They consist of engine, spray and combustion 0D, 1D & 3D modelling using amongst others CFD models utilising stochastic models for combustion and spray atomization in RANS and LES turbulence modeling. On a leadership level, you will have experimentalists and researchers working with computer simulation in your team and it is expected that these disciplines work together as a team and with other research teams within the division.

As professor, you are to play a leading role in research and education in your subject area. Duties include performing your own research, teaching on undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels, supervising PhD students and taking part in leadership and administration of both research and other activities. Other important aspects of the position include providing information and communicating about research and current development in the subject area, planning research projects and cooperating within academia and with society at large.

Together with the leadership team you will shape future directions for the division in the modeling area beyond combustion in a rapidly developing automotive industry. Continuation and further engagement of the division in national and international network activities within the research community, e.g. the engine combustion network (ECN), is requested.

Qualifications
We are looking for an internationally well-connected and innovative researcher who has proven to make significant and innovative contributions in the area of combustion and/or spray modeling for engineering applications. We would like to see evidence of a proficient publication record in leading scientific journals.

You enjoy working in a team and have the skill to lead and develop people and have the ability to network and connect with different stakeholders, national and international.

You have at least a PhD degree and hold a Professor title when working in academia or similar recognized expertise level when working in industry. Pedagogical competence on all levels shall be of good quality and well documented. You have completed courses on teaching and learning in higher education or other equivalent education (15 higher education credits) and completed courses in doctoral supervision or other equivalent education (3 higher education credits). An exception can be made in the event of external recruitment, but the individual is expected to complete 15 higher education credits worth of courses on teaching and learning in higher education as well as a course in doctoral supervision during the first two years of the appointment.

In your application you should provide evidence of your good ability to supervise doctoral students, your good ability to collaborate with organizations outside of academia and your ability to obtain external funding.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish on the undergraduate level after two years. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
