Postdoctoral Fellows in Cancer and Neurodegeneration

University of Pennsylvania (PENN), United States

Philadelphia, PA, United States

Two postdoctoral research positions are available in the laboratory of Dr. Xiaolu Yang at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The lab studies neurodegenerative disease and cancer. Current projects focus on two areas:

(1) Protein quality control (PQC) and the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease. Our lab recently identified a novel PQC system in animal cells that is multifunctional and powerful. We are investigating the mechanism of action of this system and its role in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and polyglutamine diseases.

(2) The tumor suppressor p53 and tumor cell metabolism. We are interested in the functions and regulation of the preeminent tumor suppressor p53. Our recent results revealed an important role for p53 in modulating metabolism. We are continuing to investigate the function of p53 as both a sentinel and a regulator for various metabolic activities. We are also studying metabolic alterations that drive tumor initiation and progression.
