Post-Doctoral Researcher (Underwater Machine Vision)
Research Group Focus
Although more than half of Earth’s surface lies in the deep sea, we are lacking systematic visual maps virtually of the entire deep ocean. The goal of the new group is to enable visual mapping and quantitative imaging from (robotic) deep sea platforms despite lighting, refraction and localization challenges and other ocean realities. In particular, we aim for practical (auto-)calibration approaches and reliable and robust mapping algorithms that can efficiently deal with large numbers of images in challenging vision scenarios.
The successful applicant will
devise/adapt mathematical models for underwater light propagation and sensing to geometric and radiometric vision problemswork with cameras, lights and other equipment in the lab or at seadesign (auto-)calibration technologies for deep sea cameras and lightsparticipate in conferences and publish scientific articlesdevelop software for visual underwater mapping, calibration and simulationadvise PhD and MSc students on underwater vision topicsdo interdisciplinary collaborations with marine technology or ocean sciencesparticipate in research cruises (depending on availability/schedule)
Applicants must have
a university degree in science or engineering and a PhD in the field of machine vision (or other disciplines related to automated measurements with cameras, like robotics or photogrammetry)practical experience in use and calibration of camerasexperience in C++ programming and use of large software librariesknowledge of multiple-view relations and parameter estimationexperience either in geometric (e.g. visual SLAM) or radiometric (e.g. image restoration, HDR) vision and willingness to connect both topicsgood communication skills in English language
It is appreciated, but not necessary, if applicants also have experience in
underwater imaging, underwater light propagation or opticsvisual simulation (rendering of images) and GPU usageoptimization, robust estimation with large numbers of measurements/parametersadvising students
We offer an exciting environment and the opportunity for computer vision approaches being used to improve our understanding of the Earth and the oceans. Current collaborations cover black smoker fields, methane seepage, coral reefs, disposed munitions from the world wars, underwater volcanoes, marine resources and many more topics. These are investigated either with towed cameras, landers or with GEOMAR’s robotic teams on research vessels that operate in all oceans, typically up to 6000m water depth. The new research group also maintains excellent links to the computer science and engineering departments of Kiel’s Christian-Albrechts-University and the University of Applied Sciences.
The position is available for a funding period until May, 31st, 2022, but could possibly be extended later, depending on project evaluation. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position can be split.
