UC Berkeley College of Chemistry

Postdoctoral Researcher

UC Berkeley College of Chemistry

Berkeley, United States

The Utzat Research Group at the UC Berkeley College of Chemistry is seeking postdoctoral researchers with diverse backgrounds. We are a new experimental team (launching in July 2022) interested in nano-optics, optical spectroscopy, and optical materials. Our goal is to establish the basic and applied science of nanoscale light-matter interaction with an eye on translational applications in (quantum) optoelectronics and ultrasensitive optical detection.

Available Positions and Requirements:

  1. Development of advanced optical metrology of solid-state single-photon emitters. The successful candidate will have a strong background in building optical setups, condensed matter dynamics, cryogenics, and quantum optics. Excellent programming skills are highly desirable.
  2. Chemical synthesis of lead-halide perovskites and modification of 2D materials for optoelectronics beyond solar. The successful candidate will have a strong background in inorganic materials synthesis and characterization. Experience with top-down nanofabrication and nanophotonics is a plus.
  3. Implementation of novel optical metrology of single proteins. The successful candidate will have a strong background in optical spectroscopy and/or quantum optics. Experience with single-molecule Raman spectroscopy or nanophotonics is a plus.

Team Expectations and Culture:

We are building an interdisciplinary team with the shared objective of excellence in all aspects of the scientific process; creative conception, rigorous technical execution, open communication, and dedicated mentorship. We embrace hard scientific challenges and draw from a variety of technologies to find non-obvious solutions. We expect applicants to share a curiosity-driven motivation, teamwork skills, persistence in the face of challenges, and exceptional technical aptitude and work ethic.

Postdoctoral scholars in the Utzat group are given the opportunity to lead new high-risk/high-impact projects, which will require independence, initiative, and commitment to establishing infrastructure and mentorship of graduate students. To this end, we are seeking diverse applicants with backgrounds in physical chemistry, chemical physics, inorganic chemistry, physics, or materials science. Openness to new challenges and drive to learn are more important than specific experience.

Benefits of joining:

  • The opportunity to develop novel scientific tools with cutting-edge technical equipment.
  • The chance to drive research directions in close collaboration with our team.
  • A stimulating environment in one of the best chemistry departments and the broader UC Berkeley community.
  • The opportunity to help build a team and establish a positive, supportive work culture.
  • A team and mentor committed to people development and professional growth.

To Apply:

Please email Dr. Utzat (hutzat@berkeley.edu)  a single pdf with your CV, the names and emails of three references, and short answers to the following questions.

  1. Which position are you most excited about and why?
  2. What scientific accomplishment makes you most proud?
  3. What is the hardest technical problem you have solved and how?
  4. Why are you choosing to do a postdoc?
