Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

Postdoctoral Researcher in Phycology

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences

East Boothbay, ME, United States

Overview

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral phycologist interested in applying research on mineral content, nutraceutical qualities, biochemical composition, and optimized cultivation techniques for macroalgae species to work with Drs. Nichole Price, Steve Archer, and David Emerson. Experience in aspects of nutrient uptake, regulation of allelochemical defense, environmental stress tolerance, and linking reactive oxygen metabolism and secondary metabolites to production potential and product valuation through physiological assays and systematic literature review (meta-analyses) would be a definite benefit.

Position Details

Our aim is to identify promising macroalgae species and elicit peak performance from a suite of potential candidates in an industrial application to boost animal and/or soil health. We consider this research to be commercially valuable and so it will combine applied ‘non-disclosure’ aspects with pure, publishable research investigations. This position will offer opportunities for multi-institution and transdisciplinary collaboration and pursuit of independent funding. This position will supervise a technician and undergraduate students. The main duties would be primary production and tissue quality analyses using a wide variety of methods; stress tolerance, species competition, and nutrient uptake assays; statistical analyses and database generation; and manuscript preparation.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Chemical Ecology, Benthic Marine Ecology or Phycology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of biochemistry of enzyme-based halogenation processes and polyphenolic compound production.
  • Experience with macroalgae cultivation, husbandry, and processing.
  • Strong oral and written skills, demonstrated publication record, ability to work in a cross-institutional team.
