SUMMARY:

We seek a postdoctoral researcher to develop, test, and apply a fire module across the Arctic-boreal zone within an ecosystem process model. The postdoctoral researcher will survey current fire models, develop a fire module within the DVM-DOS-TEM model, calibrate and validate fire regime properties including burned area, carbon emissions, and fire-permafrost interactions using available field and geospatial data, and apply the model across the high latitudes. This position is part of a larger project to monitor and project Arctic-boreal carbon emissions, inform climate mitigation policy, and facilitate climate adaptation in permafrost regions. The successful candidate will work within a highly collaborative environment including a team of process modelers, remote sensing experts, and field scientists, and have opportunities to communicate project results and engage with different audiences through in-person and virtual meetings, multimedia outreach materials, and website design.

Responsibilities:

  • Survey existing process fire models for their applicability in boreal forests and arctic tundra and their potential integration into DVM-DOS-TEM.
  • Integrate a fire module in DVM-DOS-TEM.
  • Optimize parameters and algorithms, and independently verify their performance, using existing field and geospatial data.
  • Apply the resulting model across the Arctic-boreal zone.
  • Lead manuscript preparation and publication.
  • Present results at relevant conferences and meetings.
  • Work closely with a team of Arctic researchers to understand and communicate the implications of changing fire regimes, carbon budgets, and permafrost thaw on Arctic residents and global climate.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ph.D. (granted or expected soon) in Earth System Science, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Geography, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and apply ecosystem models, conduct spatial analysis, and manage large data sets.
  • Experience in modeling wildfire, arctic-boreal ecosystems, and/or DVM-DOS-TEM preferred but not expected.
  • Demonstrated record of publication in scientific journals.
  • Ability to work as a member of a highly collaborative team, work across disciplines, and interest in contributing to broader science, communication, and policy goals.

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The annual salary range is $65,000 – $70,000. This is a three-year fixed-term appointment with the potential to extend. Woodwell offers a generous benefits package and work life balance.
