Postdoctoral Research Scientist (m/f/x)

Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ)

Potsdam, Germany

Area of research:

Scientific / postdoctoral posts

Job description:

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national research centre for Earth sciences in Germany. With approximately 1.280 employees (including visiting scientists), the GFZ is conducting interdisciplinary research on the “System Earth” and the influence of humans on the planet. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, it is part of Germany’s largest science organization. For Section 4.7 "Earth Surface Process Modelling" we invite applications for a postdoctoral research scientist to develop and utilize a coastal profile evolution model to explore the sensitivity of coral reef morphology and chronostratigraphy to the combined effects of sea level oscillations, vertical land motion, wave erosion, and coral reef growth.

Job Vacancy No. 3655

The candidate will develop a profile model of reef and bedrock coast development capable of reproducing both the dynamics of reef evolution over glacial-interglacial timescales and the observed variety of reef morphologies and chronostratigraphies. They will then (1) identify suitable field sites and datasets against which to parameterize and validate the model; and (2) use the model to systematically test the influence of environmental conditions and process rates on reef chronostratigraphy, particularly the extent to which reef terrace ages and displacements coincide with the timing and relative elevations of glacio-eustatic highstand sea levels. Pursuant to these research goals, the candidate will develop efficient implementations of the relevant coastal evolution models; compile and analyze topobathymetric, geochronologic, biogeographic, and oceanographic datasets at select study sites; and evaluate and refine techniques to compare modeled and observed terrace morphologies and chronostratigraphies. Depending on the candidate’s interests, the research goals could also involve marine terrace surveying, sampling, and laboratory analyses with external collaborators.

Your responsibilities:

  • literature review and research project development
  • model development and validation
  • interpretation and analysis of the results
  • presentation, publication, and distribution of research results (according to funding body directives)
  • scientific supervision and technical support of colleagues, in particular PhD and MSc students

Your qualifications:

  • MSc or equivalent in Earth science or a related field
  • PhD in Earth science or a related field
  • specialized knowledge in the modelling of earth surface processes
  • demonstrated advanced knowledge and experience in programming language (e.g. Matlab, C++, Python, Fortran)
  • demonstrated capacity for international teamwork and excellent communication skills
  • demonstrated excellence in publication
  • proficiency in spoken and written English
