Our London Discovery Centre is seeking a passionate and driven postdoctoral researcher with expertise in microscopy, molecular biology and cell biology to join our Mitochondrial Dysfunction Team for a 3-year position. The focus of the group is understanding key determinants of mitochondrial dysfunction which can be effectively targeted with novel medicines for age-related conditions, with a primary interest in neurodegeneration.
The overarching aim of this project is to gain mechanistic insight into the role of mitochondrial-lysosomal contact sites in recovering mitochondrial function and cellular homeostasis via repair rather than degradative mitophagy. This ‘repair’ pathway may be important in understanding dysfunctional mitochondrial pathology in Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, within which the mitochondrial degradation pathway (mitophagy) is compromised.
The postdoctoral fellow will benefit from access to state-of-the-art equipment, including high-content imaging and super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. They will be supported by senior scientists with extensive experience in mitochondrial biology, molecular biology, cell biology (including iPSCs) and neuroscience, and be expected to interact with the wider mitochondrial biology network and academic collaborators.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Delivering high quality, reproducible experimental data, which is hypothesis driven (key responsibility)
- Being up-to-date on literature in the field
- Manuscript preparation
- Contribute to laboratory running and be a conscientious member of the team
- Timely write-up of reports and data
- Regular presentations at internal meetings and at external meetings if the opportunity arises.
Education Minimum Requirement:
- Candidates must currently hold a PhD OR receive a PhD by fall
Required Experience and Skills:
- Mammalian cell culture experience
- Molecular Biology – DNA/RNA isolation, Western blotting, transfection
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Understanding of statistics
Preferred Experience and Skills: (List 3 to 5 Preferred Skills)
- Understanding of mitochondrial biology
- Preparation of primary cell culture and differentiation of iPSC cell culture
- Gene editing – CRISPR
