The University of Memphis is shifting the innovation paradigm with a new program that enables deep science post doc fellows to become industry pioneers by utilizing patented intellectual property to turn great ideas into successful companies. This position is meant to provide an avenue for post docs interested in alternatives to traditional research roles to accelerate their professional development in a research-driven context while equipping them with the professional toolkit to become successful entrepreneurs.
Candidates will be responsible for conducting the deep science research required to bring an existing patent to a stage of commercial development. The candidate should have an interest in entrepreneurship and is required to engage in professional development associated with this topic.
The successful candidate is expected to have experience in relevant areas of research associated with the selected invention and will be mentored by the inventing faculty member. Candidates may utilize their own or another institution’s intellectual property in conjunction with University of Memphis IP, provided that all concerned parties are made aware in advance of position acceptance.
No teaching load required.
Candidates shall have completed PhD in a relevant discipline and must be able to work full-time. Candidates interested in traditional, tenure-track faculty positions should not apply. The ability to work successfully in a team environment and be self-motivated are critical. The candidate should be able to think critically and have an entrepreneurial spirit.
Post doc fellows will be state employees with the University of Memphis, provided with salary and benefits for two years and funds for initial startup costs. Post docs will also have access to the researchers and labs where the University intellectual property was developed and will be provided office space in the University Research Park, as requested.
