Postdoctoral Fellow in Synthetic Genomics
Salary range £31,897 – £39,986 depending on experience plus excellent benefits
Fixed Term contract for 3 years
A postdoctoral position is available at the Wellcome Sanger Institute (WSI) to advance research in human genome synthetic genomics. This position will be led by Prof. Patrick Yizhi Cai (University of Manchester, www.cailab.org) as part of the Institute’s new Synthetic Genomics Initiative working within the Institute’s Cancer section. The role will coordinate with ongoing research in cancer genomics, and new research in designing and implementing synthetic genomics methods for the human genome. This is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to develop and demonstrate state-of-the-art methods for using genome engineering and genomic synthesis to synthetically design, synthesize and characterize synthetic mitochondrial genomes. As the goal is focused on showcasing technology development, there will be substantial freedom for the postdoc to guide the research of the project.
The post will initially be based in Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and potentially relocated to Sanger Institute later in the project.
Successful candidates will be expected to drive forward the project, working closely with relevant members of the Institute and the wider scientific community to accomplish scientific objectives.
• A PhD in a relevant area of Biological Sciences, and a passion for problem solving
• Experience in a range of relevant molecular biology techniques
• The ability to effectively communicate with collaborators and occasionally present oral communication to large groups
• Proven independent working style, technical problem solving, data analysis and generation of novel ideas
• Experience in DNA manipulation technologies, especially approaches to deliver and site-specifically integrate large pieces of DNA into genomes and/or mitochondria
• Experience working with mitochondrial genomes
• Experience in genome editing and engineering
• Experience in yeast or E. coli synthetic biology
