Job description:

As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.

The newly founded Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) at the University of Leipzig is part of the Helmholtz Zentrum München and aims to uncover the molecular underpinnings of metabolic, obesity and vascular disorders to enable precision therapies. As one of the world’s leading research institutes, the Helmholtz Zentrum München is a highly driven and stimulating international environment. Together with renowned scientists and supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure, you will have the opportunity to make important contributions towards scientific knowledge and the improvement of people’s quality of life at our institue in Leipzig.

The Vascular Epigenetics group at the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) is now recruiting a

Postdoctoral Fellow in crosstalk between Epigenetics, Metabolism and Vascular Biology in Leipzig (f/m/d)
2019/0344

Job Description

The Vascular Epigenetics group, headed by Dr. Bilal Sheikh, elucidates the molecular mechanisms that underpin the complex interplay between metabolic, lifestyle and epigenetic factors. The group focuses on these themes in the context of vascular function and vascular disease. In close partnership with the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig and the University Hospital Leipzig, we aim to translate our discoveries into effective therapies against vascular dysfunction in a variety of pathologies.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work on one or more exciting projects that span the fields of epigenetics, metabolism and vascular biology. The projects will involve dissecting molecular mechanisms and phenotypic changes in animal models using state-of-the-art techniques such as single cell technologies (10x genomics), next-generation sequencing, chromatin analyses and mass spectrometry based metabolomics. In addition, human clinical samples will be available for translational research.

Your Qualifications

The ideal applicant should be highly motivated, have good communication skills and be able to independently drive research projects. A background in mammalian cell culture techniques and animal models is required. Experience with Crispr/Cas9 technology, flow cytometry, bioinformatic analyses (in R) and single-cell technologies would be beneficial. The candidate should have completed (or shortly will complete) a highly successful PhD with at least one first author paper in a reputable international journal.

What we offer you

The HI-MAG offers a world-class, international and highly collaborative environment with extensive scientific resources. We provide you with a challenging and versatile workplace, allowing you the freedom to follow your instincts and be creative.
