  • Title of the position
    Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiovascular Physiology

  • Disciplinary Specialty or Research (detailed)
The area of our research focuses on the vascular complication in diabetes and pulmonary hypertension, in particular mitochondrial function, calcium handling in the endoplasmic reticulum, and cell-cell communication in endothelial and smooth muscle cells. The incumbent must have skills to conduct physiological experiments using mice (i.e., evaluation of cardiac function [e.g., LVSP, RVSP, dP/dt, EF, CFVR], dissection of small arteries [coronary and pulmonary artery], isometric tension measurement, and endothelial/smooth muscle cell isolation).

  • Description of the Position (detailed)
Dr. Ayako Makino in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of California, San Diego is seeking a highly-motivated Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiovascular Physiology

    Duties and Responsibilities include:
o Perform physiological experiments in mice (i.e., evaluation of cardiac function using Millar system (e.g., LVSP, RVSP, dP/dt, EF) and coronary flow reserve using ultrasound system, making the cardiac ischemia/reperfusion model, dissection of small arteries [coronary and pulmonary artery], and isometric tension measurement).
o Isolate vascular endothelial/smooth muscle cells from mouse heart and lung.
o Conduct basic molecular biological experiments (e.g., Western Blot, PCR, qPCR).
o Perform fluorescence microscopy experiments to measure Ca2+ and ROS concentration in cytoplasm and mitochondria.
o Data acquisition and analysis, grant and manuscript preparation, and presentation of findings at weekly lab meetings.
o Coordinate with other investigators for lab research including maintaining the function of lab equipment, managing the lab research record (including methodological approaches and animal protocols), and maintaining transgenic mouse colony.

  • Qualification Required
o Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences, M.D. or equivalent degree and at least two-year work experience in a laboratory are required.
o Skills of physiological experiments including evaluation of cardiac functions, isometric tension experiments, cell isolation, and generation of I/R mouse model.
o Skill in conducting PCR, qPCR, and WB.
o Skills of animal handling and management of mouse colony.
    o Aseptic techniques.
o Ability to write a draft of manuscript and edit the content.
o Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline.

  • Salary/Stipend
    According UCSD standards/regulations.

  • Application procedure
The applicants should send a C.V., a Letter of Interest, and the names and contact information of three references to the PI at
