Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics (MPI-MG)

Berlin, Germany

The Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin is an international research institute with approx. 350 employees, working in the field of molecular genetics. A special focus lies on functional genomics of man and other organisms.

The research groups of Dr. Denes Hnisz and Prof. Dr. Martin Vingron offer an open fulltime position:

Postdoctoral Associate / Staff Scientist (m/f/div)
Computational Biology
(E 14 according to the TVöD salary scale)
Code: 21-07

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic computational biologist / bioinformatician to study principles of gene control underlying critical physiological and pathological cell states. We seek to understand how transcriptional programs are established during development, how their corruption leads to pathologies, and how this knowledge can be used for therapeutic manipulation of human disease genes.

The successful candidate should have a passion to solve mysteries, and the willingness and ability to learn and adapt to competitive environments. A PhD degree or a similar qualification in Bioinformatics / Biology is required. Strong coding skills, and experience with Next Generation Sequence analyses are essential. The successful candidate will pursue projects on the interface of the research interests of the Hnisz and Vingron labs, and will be a critical conduit between these two leads. Example project spaces include:

  1. Developing machine learning-based classification tools for understanding the sequence features that drive phase separation behavior of key transcriptional regulators
  2. Developing models and approaches for interrogating NGS data, including genome structure mapping, single cell RNA sequencing data to footprint biomolecular condensates on the genome
  3. Innovating approaches to integrate data from high content image-based screens and chemical perturbation technologies to build workflows for preclinical testing of small molecules targeting transcriptional condensates.

The Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin is the flagship institute of the Max Planck Society for genome research, offering an internationally competitive research environment and cutting edge infrastructure for genomics and big data tools. The institute is located in Berlin, a thriving European capitol, and offers competitive salaries and social benefits.

The position is limited for three years. It is available from now on but starting dates are negotiable.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Interested candidates should submit their application including (i) a brief cover letter (describing your motivation), (ii) a CV, (iii) contact information of 2-3 references. Please send all documents as a single pdf-file via e-mail. Further inquires are also welcome.
