For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Postdoctoral Associate – Laser Science

Limited: 2 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSPO011/2021 | Deadline: 15.06.2021 / Deadline: open | Full-time

DESY, with its 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The Ultrafast Optics and X-rays Group ( has as its mission the design, fabrication and test of cutting-edge ultrafast optical technologies that may serve advanced accelerators and light sources. The focus is on development of new electron and photon sources at the frontiers of ultrafast science for probing material on atomic spatial and temporal scales. The program includes high-average power and energy lasers, coherent synthesis of sub-cycle optical pulses for controlled attosecond pulse generation, millijoule-scale THz pulses to power accelerators and table-top electron and X-ray sources. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary, international team and benefit from a uniquely stimulating research environment. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Associate.

About the role:

  • Develop Joule-class lasers to power revolutionary electron accelerators
  • Participate in the development of mode-locked fiber oscillators and chirped-pulse fiber amplifiers
  • Employ developed laser sources for high energy terahertz generation
  • Support developing cutting-edge, tens-of-mJ, high-field terahertz radiation sources

To be successful in this role:

  • PhD degree in experimental physics, electrical engineering or equivalent qualification
  • Strong background in high energy and/or high-power lasers
  • Familiarity with cryogenics, fiber-optics and device-control software
  • Ability to conduct independent research while contributing to team projects
  • Communication skills and team spirit
  • High motivation with a strong interest to work on disruptive technologies

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees.
