The scholarship is at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics and the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine, Infection Biology.
Mobile Genetic Elements (MGEs) are intrinsically related to pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance and one of the main factors in bacterial evolution. Thus understanding how MGEs express their genes and replicate their DNA is critical for our success combating bacterial infections. We study three important MGE in Staphylococcus aureus: i) Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome (SCC elements), responsible for Methicillin Resistance S. aureus or MRSA; ii) staphylococcal bacteriophages and iii) Staphylococcus aureus Pathogenicity Islands (SaPIs), both phages and SaPIs have fundamental roles in bacterial plasticity and pathogenesis.
We now offer one post-doc scholarship to study gene expression and DNA replication of staphylococcal MGEs using a multidisciplinary approach: in vivo experiments using genetics and molecular biology approaches, complemented with biochemistry and structural biology, such as electron cryomicroscopy (cryoEM) and X-ray crystallography.
The research will take place in a new, international and well-funded (Wallenberg Foundation) research group. The Umeå Core Facility Electron Microscopy (https://www.umu.se/en/UCEM) is well equipped with a Titan Krios TEM, Falcon 3 detector, Volta phase plate, autoloader, etc. The X-Ray Crystallography Platform is also well equipped with in-house X-Ray source, mosquito robot, etc. Synchrotron’s access is secured.
The scholarship is full-time for two years.
To be eligible for the scholarship you should have a PhD, or equivalent, in microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry or related discipline. We are seeking applicants with experience in expression and purification of recombinant proteins. Applicants with a strong background in cryoEM are encouraged to apply. We expect the candidate to be able to do independent research and as part of a team. Good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
Interested candidates should send a single PDF file composed by i) a cover letter (1 page), ii) CV (3 pages max), iii) a complete publication list, iv) the contact information of 3 references and v) copies of the latest degree certificate(s).
Your complete application, marked with reference number FS 2.1.6-898-19, should be sent to email@example.com (state the reference number as subject), before 2019-06-15.
The department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics is located within the Chemical Biological Centre (in Swedish “Kemiskt Biologiskt Centrum”, KBC) – an interdisciplinary research centre for the natural sciences and medicine at Umeå University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The centre is unique in its collaborative structure and offers an excellent scientific infrastructure with several core facilities and technical platforms. Our goal is to promote a positive, creative, and interdisciplinary environment for research combined with an excellent graduate and undergraduate education. You can find more information here: www.umu.se/en/kbc.
Umeå University is dedicated to providing creative environments for learning and work. We offer a wide variety of courses and programs, world leading research, and excellent innovation and collaboration opportunities. 4 000 employees and nearly 34 000 students have already chosen Umeå University.
