Area of research:
Scientific / postdoctoral posts
DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. More than 2400 employees work at our two locations Hamburg and Zeuthen in science, technology and administration.
X-ray microscopy of biological objects is classically done by recording the absorption/transmission signal at each sample location, using the photo-electric effect. A major obstacle is the corresponding radiation damage of the sample. A potentially much better signal to damage ratio can be achieved by using higher X-ray energies and recording the Compton scattered signal. The Compton Microscopy Project aims to develop the methods and instrumentation required. We are looking to recruit a postdoc to work on the detector side of the project.
Oversee the construction of a detector prototype using LAMBDA modules with high-Z sensorsCharacterize the performance of the developed prototypesParticipate in the beamline experiments, including preparation and data analysisTake part in the development project for edgeless detector modules based on the through-silicon-via (TSV) technology and apply these to the Compton imaging project
PhD in physics, electronics or equivalent fieldExperience with advanced X-ray detectors, preferably systems based on Medipix/Timepix read out chipsExperience with characterizing/calibrating X-ray detectorsAffinity with instrumentation for X-ray experiments
Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY operates flexible work schemes. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. Vacant positions at DESY are in general open to part-time-work. During each application procedure DESY will assess whether the post can be filled with part-time employees.
