DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. More than 2400 employees work at our two locations Hamburg and Zeuthen in science, technology and administration.
DESY looks back on a long tradition in synchrotron radiation experiments in a wide range of applications and has developed into one of the leading centres in this field worldwide. For high-end synchrotron radiation applications, the 3rd generation source PETRA III is available since 2009 as one of the most brilliant X-ray sources worldwide. PETRA III provides outstanding experimental opportunities for chemical sciences by studying reactions and transformation processes under in situ and operando conditions. Various beamlines specialized on diffraction, scattering, and spectroscopy techniques using hard and high-energy X-rays dedicate beam time to chemistry. The candidate should pursue their own research project in the field of chemistry or materials science and enable the related user community to successfully perform cutting-edge experiments.
Work in a highly team-oriented environment in very close collaboration with the user communityDevelop and actively pursue an own in-house research programSupport users of chemical in situ and operando experiments at various PETRA III beamlinesOptimize and integrate chemistry sample environments into different beamlinesRepresent to the international user community the capabilities for chemical research at PETRA III with an emphasis on diffraction and scattering techniques
PhD in chemistry, materials science, or equivalent qualificationProfound knowledge and expertise in at least one X-ray based analysis method for chemical research (diffraction, scattering, spectroscopy, etc.)High-level skills in operando & in-situ chemical experiments are requiredExperimental experience at 3rd generation synchrotron sources is an assetAbility to coordinate scientific and technical tasks of in situ and operando experimentsExcellent team workerExcellent communication skills (English)
Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY operates flexible work schemes. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. Vacant positions at DESY are in general open to part-time-work. During each application procedure DESY will assess whether the post can be filled with part-time employees.
