Postdoc and Researcher in Microbiology: Systems biology approaches to investigate antibiotic tolerance in bacteria

University of Würzburg

Würzburg, Germany

Bacteria are among the most difficult-to-treat infectious agents. Our recently established lab develops high-throughput approaches to study antimicrobial mode of action, and decipher how bacterial molecular networks re-wire in response to multi-antibiotic therapies (Brochado et al, Nature 2018). We are looking for 2 highly motivated scientists (1 Postdoc and 1 Researcher / senior Postdoc) to investigate how combinatorial drug treatments impact bacterial cell death and antibiotic tolerance using high-throughput approaches.

We apply a wide range of state-of-the-art systems biology tools, such as high-throughput phenotypic screening of bacterial knockout libraries to elucidate antibiotic mode of action. We are part of the Biocenter and the ZINF, Würzburg University in Germany, which offer a vibrant and international research environment.

We offer:

  • The opportunity to work on a timely topic – antibiotics – in an exciting environment, using cutting edge technologies for high-throughput systems biology approaches in bacteria.
  • Continuous scientific mentoring & academic training.
  • Salary benefits according to public service positions in Germany.

Requirements for Postdoc:

  • Excellent PhD in Biology, Biotechnology or equivalent.
  • Sound knowledge and strong interest in systems biology of bacteria. e.g. chemical genomics, NGS technologies, integration of omics data, etc.
  • Computational biology, scripting/programming experience.
  • Experience with cell and molecular biology of bacteria is an advantage, but not required.
  • Fluent English speaking and writing skills, German is not required.

Requirements for Researcher:

  • Excellent PhD in Biology, Biotechnology or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years postdoctoral experience in cell biology of bacteria or bacterial genetics.
  • Sound knowledge and strong interest in bacterial molecular biology, cell biology & microscopy.
  • Experience with infection biology (tissue culture) is welcome, but not mandatory.
  • Fluent English speaking and writing skills, German is not required.
