Physician and Fellowship Program Director in Allergy and Immunology
The NIH intramural research program seeks an experienced physician to serve as program director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) allergy and immunology (A&I) fellowship program. NIAID is a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The position will require at least 50% time and effort in directing the ACGME-accredited program in A&I and offer support for part-time opportunity to conduct clinical research in collaboration with A&I faculty members.
NIAID offers a three-year, ACGME-accredited training program in allergy and immunology. This program, open to physicians who are well grounded in clinical internal medicine or pediatrics, is designed to provide trainees with the high-quality clinical and laboratory skills that will enable them to pursue careers in academic medicine. The A&I fellowship program is housed within the Laboratory of Allergic Diseases (LAD), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), NIAID, which conducts basic and clinical research on immunologic diseases with an emphasis on disorders of immediate hypersensitivity, which include the spectrum of classic allergic diseases. LAD is composed of an interactive group of Ph.D.s, M.D.s, research nurses, technicians, and administrative staff, who work in contemporary laboratories adjacent to NIAID’s clinical facilities. Scientific personnel are engaged in basic and translational research aimed at understanding the genetics and pathology underlying the immune dysfunction associated with allergic inflammation.
The program director would oversee the A&I fellowship program, which enrolls up to four new clinical trainees per year. The incumbent would be responsible for devising a dynamic educational program for the fellows. The incumbent would oversee the selection, credentialing, scheduling, evaluating, and mentoring of fellows in concert with faculty members. The program director would be responsible for ensuring the fulfillment of all elements required by the ACGME to maintain program accreditation and would be required to report to the NIH institutional graduate medical education committee on a regular basis. The program director will serve as an attending physician at the NIH Clinical Center and conduct clinical protocols or trials. The incumbent will have access to appropriate administrative resources to support the ACGME-approved A&I training program as well as access to resources including nurses, study coordinators, and nurse practitioners.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in allergic and immunologic diseases, management of an A&I clinical fellowship program, and oversight of complex clinical protocols. Board certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI) is required to direct the A&I fellowship program. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of documented educational and/or administrative experience; hold a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and meet the requirements to be credentialed at the NIH Clinical Center.
