University Medical Center Gottingen (UMG)

PhD student / PostDoc position (f/m/d)

University Medical Center Göttingen

Göttingen, Germany

The University Medicine Center Göttingen, Department of Neurology, announces the immediate availability of a

PhD student / PostDoc position (f/m/d)

initially limited to 31.12.2021 with the opportunity for prolongation, fulltime | salary according to TV-L

The University Medicine Center Göttingen is a tertiary care center and offers great development potential. Its 7,900 employees work in over 65 departments and facilities to provide top-quality patient care, excellent research and modern teaching. Göttingen, “City of Science”, located near the center of Germany, the University Medical Center Göttingen is embedded in the city’s attractive network of scientific research facilities.

The research project is embedded into the Excellence Cluster MBExC 2067 and aims to understand the contribution of synuclein proteins to etiology of Parkinson’s disease (PD).

By using human neurons derived from established iPSC lines the PhD student / PostDoc (f/m/d) will establish the relative impact of intra- and extracellular synuclein on neuronal pathophysiology in terms of neurodegeneration and network activity. We are especially interested in delineating (patho-) physiological differences between alphasynuclein, for which a contribution to PD is well established, and the closely related beta-synuclein, which appears to play a more pronounced role in Parkinson’s disease and Dementia with Lewy Bodies that currently are thought. Thus, the project is part of a highly competitive research endeavor, and offers excellent perspectives for scientific career development.

The successful candidate will have proven solid experiences with iPSC-derived cell culture, ideally has already differentiated such cell lines into neurons, and is also experienced with live imaging, immunocytochemistry and molecular biology. We offer a great team spirit, state of the art equipment and work technology (live imaging in cells and animals, a large library of recombinant AAV vectors expressing synuclein variants and fluorescent sensors, availability of core units for Crispr / Cas, proteomics and transcriptomics etc.).

Salary is according to German Public Service scale 13 TV-L. The contract is initially limited to December 31th, 2021, with the opportunity for prolongation.
